Not sure if it is in the right forum...if not sorry.

This is an e-mail I reveived for an assessment day I will be attending, they have asked each of us to do some research before hand.

Delegate Preparation

Prior to the assessment event you will need to carry out some research based on the following question:

Who will be the successes and the failures in the high street in the next 5-years?
Why?

Please take the following into consideration:

Who – what retailers has your research identified?
Why -
Successes, what sets them apart?
Failures, what caused them to fail?

On the day you will be working in a small group and will discuss how to pull the research you have done on an individual basis together to create 1 presentation.

If you wish a flipchart may be used to support your presentation. You will make your presentation to other delegates and an assessor.

During all presentations / exercises you will be assessed on:

How well you are able to communicate your ideas, views and opinions.

The persuasiveness of your presentation e.g. what information do you have to support your conclusion and ideas.

The organisation of your presentation. Is it logical and structured?

The extent, to which you appear to have understood the problem that you have been set, i.e. have you answered the question in full
.

I only have one week to prepare so I thought of asking for ideas or comments from here.

I have my own ideas, I am not asking for it to be done, so no comments like that please.

Thanks for any help in advance.

MY IDEAS

The introduction of Sunday trading puts smaller retailers with limited staff at a disadvantage against larger retail outlets.

Purchasing power of large orgs is well-known, but the fact that they also have their own supply chains can also adversely affect the competitiveness of smaller retailers and also of independent suppliers.

The choice of retail outlets have decreased but the convenience to the shopper, range of choice and price of product value have risen.

If the consumer abandons community shops in favour of the convenience of the larger retail outlets, how will this affect long-term consumer choice.

If local shops are to survive, the local community will have to support them.

At the moment many of us are relying on our neighbour to keep the local shop in business.

I'm going to read it, but please, can you edit it, red on a blue background is a nightmare. Some people will have trouble holding focus on the text, it's a proven theory.

Love to see the look on your face when they ask you to explain the reasoning behind your answers :D

'Well I asked some guys on the interent to do my preperation..' :p

I do not intend to spurt out anything without proof. Some guys on the internet is still research.

  1. Identify all high street retailers
    • Chain stores,
    • Local stores,
    • Subsidiaries etc.
  2. What are the criteria for success / failure
    • Financials (Profit / ROE / EBITDA),
    • Market Share (locally / nationally),
    • Other measures
  3. What are the reasons for each success / failure
  4. Do your own homework

You're being too specific - start with generalisations and work down from there.

Why doesn't OcUK create a "Do my homework for me" forum?

What is wrong with people asking for some help, is that such a problem, if I went to my lecturer and asked him/her the same question as I have asked here would they also reply do your own work...or if I went to the careers office.....NO they would not.

If you have this sort of attitude then please do not post on this thread just ignore it. I really get sick and tired of stupid comments like this...ok it may be a joke but it has happened so many times on these forums. All I ask is for help/advice...exactly the same as I would from friends.

isn't there a rule against asking for homework help?

If there is then whoever made that rule must be retarded :s

What the hell is wrong with asking for some ideas on a general forum? It's using your flipping initiative. Some members may have first hand experiance, and be able to provide exactly what the OP needs. He'l most likely (if he wants to look good) be finding information out from other places as well.

Forums are a GREAT resource for knowledge, be a shame if some narrowminded person decided to ban that

I just don't understand where some of you guys get off by telling him to 'shove off and do your own homework'. Were you the geek at school who everyone copied off or something?

we had a spate of people asking for help every night, like 3-4 threads A DAY normaly starting "I need a hand with my homework...."

but this doesn't fall into that catagory, so why bash the guy and de-rail his thread? :)
So which category does it fall into? The "General Knowledge Quiz" category, per chance?

I sort of agree that the questions are very wooly to say the least.

But the future of the high street? I'm not sure i'm not a market researcher or an economist, and to be honest to properly answer your questions I think you need those big fat books that companies send out to their share holders at the end of each financial year. (I can't remember their name).

But if every customer was like me, then i'd say apart from a few types of shop most I think would die out.

Things that I don't need to "see" before hand I don't even shop for on a high street as I know for FACT that said item can be found for much cheaper on the internet. This is pretty much the situation even after postage costs are added. That includes e.g. all electrical goods, stationary, books, DVD's, boy's toys etc etc.

Now that Tesco do home delivary, I get all my groceries from them too. IMO the supermarkets are pretty good for stocking all fruit and vegetables and also i've yet to receive a bruised item. They are also cheaper than most "local" fruit & veg store or butchers. Though saying that I live in an area without many supermarkets, and if there were some on main street Kensington Liverpool (they'd be firebombed haha), I'd probably choose them everynow and again.

The only thing that I usually now use the highstreet is e.g. bargain bin shops or poundstores for totally random crap, or clothes which I try before I purchase.
