Espoo, Finland - January 29th, 2008 - Futuremark (www.futuremark.com), is proud to announce the formation of a group named the Futuremark Games Studio. For the past 10 years, Futuremark has been pushing the boundaries of PC 3D graphics performance with its 3DMark® series, which has become by far the world's most popular benchmarking software. The 3DMark series combines stunning 3D art with world class engines from Direct3D 6 up to Direct3D 10. "Futuremark Games Studio is committed to developing original IP games with the highest quality game play combined with our established track record of creating blow-your-socks-off visuals", said Tero Sarkkinen, CEO of Futuremark Corporation. "For years, our fans have been asking us when will we start making games. Very soon they are going to get it - and then some!"

Over the past 10 years Futuremark's team of brilliant artists and engineers has created remarkably beautiful demos and benchmarks for a variety of clients to show off the abilities of their platforms. Although the new studio will demonstrate its ability to seamlessly integrate the latest technologies into its engines, its mission is to build world class games that bring new and entertaining game play to gamers. This includes games and their engines that deliver stellar performance even on modest platforms right up to the most enthusiastic levels of performance hardware.

For more information about Futuremark Games Studio, please contact Tero Sarkkinen in Finland or Oliver Baltuch in California. Futuremark Games Studio personnel will also be attending GDC 2008 in San Francisco where they can be found at the Nordic Games Studios Pavilion.

Interesting!

So what do we think we'll get?

Yet another FPS?
Yet another RTS?
Yet another MMO?

There is so much variety!

So another Crytek will be in the market then - wonderful, more games that the majority of the pc gaming community can't play as they are intended.

Benchmarks are designed to stress any system available in order to make an accurate comparison, you have absolutely zero basis for claiming they'll make their games as demanding. Personally I can't wait to see what they come up with.

It was purely my own speculation based on the fact that crytek originally created FarCry as a benchmarking engine but then decided to take their business into the gaming industry and have been responsible for two games that have brought the majority of home PCs to their knees, hence why i predict futuremark will probably go the same route.

So i wouldn't call it zero basis.

[EDIT] Incorrect use of the term 'benchmarking' i in fact meant tech demo, i still think pretty strong comparisons can be drawn between the two.

How about an MMORTFPSS? (Massive Multilayer Online Real Time First Person Shooter Strategy)

The scenarios in their benchmarks are quite cool and I've always wondered what kind of backstory they have... I hope they base their game somewhat on them

Source for that?

As i said in my ninja edit, i meant tech demo, but i still feel comparisons can be drawn between futurmark and crytek despite this as both a tech demo and a benchmark are designed to showcase what a very high spec PC is capable of. I actually stated it from memory, however i had a quick trawl around for some proof just now and found:

CryENGINE is a game engine used for the first-person shooter computer game Far Cry. It was originally developed by Crytek as a technology demo for NVIDIA and, when the company saw its potential, it was turned into a game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CryENGINE

I could trawl around on megagames.com for the actual news items showing its evolution from tech demo to game but... well it would take a long time and i'm lazy :P

Also, can i just note the coincidence of this announcement coming quite shortly after the rather successful sales of crysis. Crytek are pretty much the only development team around at present geared towards producing engines that are aimed at higher end PC users and are very successful for it, its a logical step for a company to want to join this market, especially when they have the programming experience to back them up in this area.

I would have thought that their games will be brilliantly optimised, yet remaining beautiful.

Can't wait to see what they pull out of the hat =)

They made some sort of wierd halo-buggy style minigame for 3dmark2001 I think it was. I believe (may be wrong) that they have quite strong links with Remedy of Max Payne fame too...

Overall I'm not really gonna pay this much attention until we see something concrete come out of it. Making a pretty on-rails 3d render is one thing, making a fun and enjoyable full-length game is quite another
