FWD Oversteer, whats going on?

My Clio 172 has a very twitchy rear, it feels quite scary at high speeds actually. I have had it step out and didn't even realise until it caught and the car shook.
Clio wise check/replace the rear shocks when they're shot they will make the car rather tail happy, they can look fine but if they're the originals i'd guess they're knackered by now. Tis a very common thing, tends to get progressively worse as the dampers wear more.

more likely to be the front according to this..

Interesting post that clarkey, cheers for that, quite right it could be the front end, engine mounts are sound only had a look at them last weekend, front suspension upper control arm are known to fail on my car so i will check those out next.

Had the rear of the car apart tonight, both rear brakes are fine, no sticking so i'm happy with those, did notice one side of the car has gone down by about 0.5cm, rear end was level when i set the suspension up so i've jacked the "failed" side up to match the other, could have been part of the issue, took it out for a drive seems a little better but its deffo not fixed the situation, will fit the new rear dampers and see how that goes, looks like i might aswell do a full front end rebuild, i've been meaning to do this for ages anyways, oh the joy!

Is the car on coilovers? and how far down.

I removed a pair of rear coilover dampers from my passat after 3k to find them both completly knackered, no resistance at all left in them.

This was with the rear adjusters completly removed and the rubber mounts too so was rather low....

The other option is that the front ARB has come away from it's mounts or the drop links have gone but the chances of this happening without lots of knocking and clunking are extremely slim

Yea its on coilovers, not sure on the drop tbh, its already 20mm lower than the standard model before i stuck the coilovers on (being the sport) dunno about another 30 - 40mm at the front and around 20mm at the back, they've done about 16k now and i fear one of the rear dampers has gone, due to the sort of road i drive one, took one off tonight and its still got lots of resistance in it but i could do a full compression stroke with my arms, not sure if this is correct or not.

Don't think the front arbs gone, i checked this last weekend and all seemed ok with the mountings, my upper control arms are on the way out however they have slight cracking around the rubbers, so these will be changed this weekend once the parts arrive.

You should be able to push the piston all the way in on the damper and then it will come back out under the pressure in the unit. Both of mine just sat there fully compressed and didn't move at all.

Your drop isn't anything excessive, mine's prob about 40-50mm lower than the sport height.

The upper arms won't cause oversteer, more of a slack and play in the steering and are more likely to give alignment probs than handling issues unless they are clanking badly under acceleration / braking.

Yea the drops not OTT, checked a few things lastnight, jacked the whole rear up span both wheels tested the brakes, both wheels are as free to spin as eachother even after several footbrake uses, calipers seem free to slide.

Both rear shocks have no leaks i could feel with my fingers, adjusted the ride height on one side since it had dropped slightly.

This morning the cars a little better but far from great, i think it might be front end related now the only other thing it could be at the back is the rear arm bushes.

Need to wait for my full front end rebuild kit and rear dampers to arrive before i can do anything else! http://www.allgermanparts.co.uk/ourshop/prod_447624-Meyle-HD-control-arm-set.html :(

I've been doing some research and i very almost purchased a kit from a german seller at £200, been reading up about Meyle and they've actually taken the time to redesign the faults out of some of the parts, for things like this money isn't really too much of an issue, i'd rather get something that i knows 100% bob on rather than buying a cheaper one and thinking hmm i'm not quite happy about that.

Not sure at the moment, i'm currently test driving several cars and have interest in two, depending what i get will decide if i keep this car alongside or if i sell it, too much of an unknown atm for me to actually know, part of me just wants to run it till it dies and save the 12k or so i'm looking at spending. Its a fundamentally good car for what i want it to do, its just i keep wanting more power out of it and thats when things get expensive!

those special bushes and a proper turbo conversion. once youve done that though, itll still be gwd, but it will be one quick and practical load lugger so it has appeal

then something daft like a 205 or a mk2 golf if you crave even more thrills

Was thinking a project car would get some of this "desire to spanner" out of my system, but i don't really have the space atm, keep hovering over the Eliminator turbo buy button but always hold off, i've actually ordered it once only for the people at APT to tell me they wouldn't except that much on a debit car without other proof of who i was, lucky in some respects, slippery slope always wanting more power....

Its currently running a K04 so technically speaking if i got a custom map and a new intake i could see around 250bhp from my current setup, which is the more tempting option.

ko4s are gay as well anyway.

.... how about, sell up, get an audi s4, 2.7 twin turbo.

tweak thatn and itll change your life

Almost ended up with one about a year ago, but that would mean i'd have to live with two K03s's :p

Reason i didn't is i would end up with a 1998 one and as daft as it sounds i don't want my main car to be of the oldist bodyshape / age its simply not worth it, if im going to change my main car and buying something of an unknow entity its going to be something much better than a VW or older Audi :)
