FX 6100 upgrade

Did you cool the VRM heatsink when overclocking? Some guides I have been reading up on regarding overclocking these AMD boards has suggested doing this.

Also is there any difference once overclocked between the 8320/8320e/8350? Or is it just that the 8350 can reach a 'higher' clock?

The M5A99X EVO was quite cool on the VRM's as it had a good heatsink and the Phanteks cooler kept it quite cool.

I am currently using the Siverstoone HE01 cooler below with an FX9590 at stock 4700/5000MHz in a crosshair mobo. It keeps it cool and is quiet on the low fan setting. It is a big cooler though.

Suggestion for an eight core upgrade and cooler. The 8320 is capable of similar clocks to the 8350. If you can get a good deal SH for any 83xx CPU, it would be a reasonable upgrade over the earlier series. October is not too far away IF the ZEN makes its debut and more options may be available.

Thank you for the information and pictures nkata, very useful! I am thinking a second hand 83xx processor would be a good choice. Seems I should be able to get pick one up for £100 fairly easily.

Regarding ZEN, is this going to be using a new chipset, or the current AM3+?

Also how does the SST-HE01 compare to the Noctua NH-D14/D15?

Thanks again!

Zen will be a new chipset, one of the downsides of staying on the AM3+ platform, but since you already have everything but potentially a new (second hand) CPU, it doesn't apply to you.

Would see how far you can push your 6100 before you drop 100 quid on a new CPU, get a new cooler and get stuck in! :D

AM3+ is the socket. The current chipsets are 970, 990FX, etc.

Doesn't change the answer though - Zen will use a new socket (AM4) and a new chipset (unspecified).

Seems the best decision is to buy a new CPU cooler and go from there! Now does anyone have a spare DH15 lying around they don't need?!

If you're seriously considering a 5820k then just bear in mind that Broadwell-E is due out Q2 2016. I'd personally hold out at this point and just get the CPU cooler for the time being and await whatever replaces the 5820k. Not worth the hassle of switching to an FX83xx CPU in the interim in my opinion, just make the CPU cooler a nice one :)
