FX8150 Core temp V Socket Temp???

Hi there, I am hoping that someone can provide me with some help.
I have recently built a new PC using an ASUS M5A97 Pro motherboard coupled with an AMD FX8150 processer and I have also installed an Arctic Cooling Freezer A30 cooler using Arctic Cooling MX2 paste (I also have 3 case fans installed for cooling). My issue is that the Motherboard Socket temperature seems rather high (around 40 degrees on idle) whereas my core temps sit at around 20 at idle.
Under a Prime 95 stress test the socket temp rises to 65 & over (after about 8-10 minutes therefore I have to stop the tests as that is currently the "Alarm Setting" temp on the Mobo) although the core temps are only sitting around 40-42 degrees.
I have used various temp monitor programs (HW Monitor, AI Suite 2, and the Bios.) to check the temp and all seem to say the same thing.
The temperature limit for the chip is I believe around 61-65 Degrees and I am unsure as to whether the socket temperature is what I should class as the CPU temp or if I can go by the core temp?
The Mobo temp sits around 29.
I have tried reinstalling the heatsink to check that the seating is correct but that made no difference to the issue.
I had been hoping to do a little overclocking with the chip (something new for to me) but with that socket temp I am very wary.
Any help would be appreciated!

I'm getting the same on identical Rig, I too have a FX8150 on a M5A97 Pro.

I previously had my old Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 on it but was getting highs of 87 degrees under load (with Artic silver 5). the FX8150 with stock fan got as high at 67 degrees.

I replaced that with an Antec Khuler 920 yesterday, as i write this my idle CPU temp is 45-46 degrees (idle it's usually 42). Which I too think is rather high.

Under full load with stock speeds (20 mins video encoding on 95-100% on all 8 cores) it does not go above 61 degrees, which I'm happy with.

However I keep getting some rather strange anomalies. When in the BIOS the CPU seems to run at 100% and the temp climbs rapidly. I don't recall this happening with my BE 555 (with 2 and with all 4 cores unlocked).

Right now the ASUS Suite II software states 42 degrees CPU temp, as does open hardware monitor, but AMD overdrive shows TMPIN at 74 degrees (nothing showing or matching 42 anywhere else), TMPIN2 at either 0 or -264 (-264 for TMPIN3 &4) while the individual Cores show 21.9 degrees for all 8 cores. Motherboard temp reporting 38 degrees and the Water temp of 42 degrees.

On a side note the mobo did not play nice with Artic Cooler and continually reported erratic fan speeds.

I think the BIOS on this board is a bit raw and flaky. Currently running on 1208 which wasn't much of a improvement on the previous version and hasn't been updated again since April.

core temps are innacurate at idle and up to round 46c. the socket temp should not be disregarded as some suggest. What is the power phase on your board? I had a difference of 20c from socket to core under load on the asrock extreme 3 mobo. on the sabertooth they are parallel but the problem was vrm related. do you have a vrm temp reading? is your cpu throttling under load? all these temps are important. not just core

another bios update, http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3Plus/M5A97_PRO/#download

the 1208 was seriously flaky for me,

the monitoring s/ware (AI Suite II) annoying keeps telling me the CPU fan speed is too low (its not, it's water cooled and the 'feature' to monitor report it is turned off the Bios but ignores this).

but more annoying since the 1208 update it now tells all sorts of various incorrect readings (when the system is idle) - vcore too high, it's not been changed! CPU/mobo temp -200 degrees. it's all over the place.

The problem is I need to keep AI Suite to do the BIOS updates since I can't do it from the BIOS. my HDD are NTFS so it won't read the bios file and the it won't see FAT formatted USB keys. So I keep having to put up with the annoying pop-up messages and since it AI Suite is 'special' it doesn't launch via startup reg keys or startup folder so not too easy to stop it from launching at boot.

bloody annoying

Same here... even with the vcore warning @ idle speeds! I've checked the temps using various other programs and they show no warnings... wierd :(

not much of change with the 1402 bios.

still get fan speed warning despite it being turned off in the BIOS.

not getting as many vcore warnings but now seems to be moaning about another metric (i forget which).
