FX9590 Working?

Hi all,

I bought a motherboard to test an FX9590, and was under the (mistaken) impression that so long as it was a 990FX, it would do the job. The board I got was an ASRock 990FX Extreme3, which I now discover is not up to it, because the board posts and lets me muck around in the BIOS, but will not boot windows - it says CPU is not on supported list, or something similar.

Nevertheless, is this amount of functionality enough to confirm that the CPU is probably working?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like it is working but the BIOS is specifically designed not to post that CPU, probably because of its power requirements, which would overload the VRM's on that board.

That board is only 4+1 vrms. Its one of the better ones but as others have said its probably got a lock out of the higher draw cpus.

Fwiw I have managed 4.5 stable on that board, iirc at 1.375v.

What it basically boils down to is FX9590 should never have made it to retail but AMD presumably released it to spare their blushes when it came to benchmarks, you need a top end motherboard and some pretty exotic cooling for FX9590 to be realistic.

Your motherboard will be showing you that message and prevent booting to protect itself from damage.

when I was looking for a replacement for my 8350 I thought about going to the 9590 but read some horror stories about trying to keep it cool.
I bit the bullet and went for the 4690k. glad I did tbh

My Crosshair V formula (non Z) is also non supported with the FX9590 but is does recognise it on boot up.

Probably because it has good VRM's and 8 + 2 phase design it also runs well, over 5GHz if I push it.

To answer your question, yes the CPU is probably OK
