G Fast modem

Yeah, in the master socket without any extensions etc.

They've arranged the engineer visit, not sure what type of engineer though.

I did have a quick look at FTTP OD, but it's not worth the costs involved.

I haven't got G Fast installed yet.

Basically I have two packages to choose from; 160/30 and 330/50.
If I choose the fast one and find my estimated speed is incorrect and only get 170 for example, I can't down-grade to the cheaper package.
If I choose the slower one I can upgrade, but the Open Reach supplied modem is locked so won't show stats on line speed etc as it's locked to the 160/30.

I have spoken to Unchained ISP (who I will probably go with), and they said I should choose the slower/cheaper package, get myself an unlocked modem, and I'll be able to see the stats and see if it's worth upgrading to the faster one

I am with UnchainedISP as Keith a great guy who know everything on broadband tech side. He also put my line at 110% speed limit instead of 100% because G.fast use SRA can change in speed every 30 minutes to match the profile rate. I am getting 241/41 on G.fast even thought BTw estimated was 172 to 230 / 14 to 34. I was migrated to UnchainedISP from Plusnet last year as I used to be on FTTC 80/20 for almost 7 years. I am within 260m from the cabinet which it isn't that bad at all for 241/41.

Here is my stats from G.fast router:

Stats recorded 10 Feb 2022 23:44:51

DSLAM type / SW version: BDCM:0xc190 (193.144) / v0xc190
Modem/router firmware: AnnexA version - A2pvfbH043q.d26u

Downstream Upstream
Line attenuation (dB): 37.6 0.0
Signal attenuation (dB): 37.6 0.0
Connection speed (kbps): 241429 41592

Interleave depth:

Vectoring status: Unknown

RSCorr/RS (%): 0.0851 0.0548
RSUnCorr/RS (%): 0.0000 0.0000

P.S. G.fast does use Vectoring to avoid crosstalk but the router say Unknown but Keith saying all G.fast must have vectoring as it can't use it without it. So the router must be bug on vectoring side.

Sound like you have a fault on the line. As My FTTC line attenuation was 11.7dB from last May 2021 with sync rate of 79999/19999 with max rate of 82427/21536 with both SNR of 6dB / 9dB with Plusnet.

You should get full max from this line attenuation of 11.5dB. What kind of socket do you have on your Master Socket? Have you try it on test socket with your filter and also dial 17070 option 2 to see if any noise on the line or could be bad line port swap at the DP end.

Thanks for your input bulldog, very helpful. I've reported a line fault to Plusnet and an OR engineer is due out next week. I'll see what they find before I pull the trigger with g.fast.

We've only got the single point in the house which has a microfilter plate attached. I assume this is the master socket, but I will have a look at some point and make sure we haven't got a master socket outside like the new builds have.

No problem, hopefully the engineer will fix your line and reset dlm to get your line restored back to 80/20 then check again on btw checker few days later for a real estimate for your G.fast. I do believe you should get around 250/45 or more pretty easily with your cabinet approx 150m away. Let us know how it goes. Unchained Keith are lovely guy and I am with his isp and he was very helpful indeed know what he was talking about. G.fast using TTB backhaul as you normally see around 12Meg less than the sync rate after profile rate because G.fast use 95% from the sync rate for the ip profile rate but lucky Keith agree to push it to 110% instead of 100% line speed to gain more speed throughput because of speed varies in G.fast SRA.

This morning my G.fast went up to 244/40 but afternoon around 242/39 then evening around 241/41. So, it varies between 240 to 244 and 39 to 41 all day.

Below is my latest G.fast stats:

I've never seen 80/20 since moving here 2.5yrs ago. We've had the engineer out before and he said it was perfectly fine and nothing could be improved. It might be a case of going for the g.fast install and see what happens if/when the line isn't good enough.

Keith certainly seems to be very helpful and replies to any questions very quickly, but at the moment can't give me any guarantees of it working.

Are you using the stock OR modem?

No I am using my own router gfast here: https://www.zyxel.com/uk/en/product...ess-AC-N-G-fast-Gateway-XMG3927-B50A/overview

Because openreach modem is locked you can't see any stats! Also I did try this openreach modem but disappointed with low sync rate of 228/29 but when I am using my own Zyxel Gfast router as I can see full stats was 239/39 and you can also run dslstats from this router as well for more stats information.

Openreach Modem 228/29 from my isp control panel sync rate can't access full stats from it.
Zyxel Gfast Router 239/39 can see full stats from this router and third party software dslstats.

Be careful if your line still fault and not fixed by plusnet you might see less on G.fast but you don't know until it went live and openreach engineer will replaced your master socket (new one with Gfast socket) and will supplied you openreach modem but you need router as well and spare two sockets on the wall for modem and router to plugged it in.

My best advise to u start with 160/30 as you will guarantee get this speed from 150m from the cabinet. If the engineer test it and say your g.fast well over 250/40 then u can ask Keith to upgraded to 330/50 for small one off fee for regrade fee (next working day for the speed to change from 160/30 to 330/50 product) but 160/30 cost £49.99 a month and 330/50 cost £56.99 a month.
