I've just bought a 2GB G.Skill PC4000 kit to replace my old GeIL 1GB value ram. I was running the CPU (Opteron 170) at 250x10 and used to have the GeIL on a 333 multiplier. After installing the new kit I set the memory to a 400 multiplier so it would run at 500Mhz. Unfortunately the PC was very unstable and would not even start a Prime95 run at these settings :(

I then set the CPU to the default speed (200x10) and set the memory to DDR500. This time the PC wouldn't even boot! I just got a load of beeps and a blank screen.

Am I doing something wrong or is this RAM defective?
 
What motherboard do you have?

Since you can still boot into windows with the RAM and CPU at 250MHz, have you tried running memtest on the memory? See what that says first.

Also, i'm not too sure on this, but your motherboard could simply have compatibility problems with the new RAM, as the value RAM and the expensive stuff would use different chips i'd assume.

See how the memtest goes 1st.
 
Also its worth checking to see if the timings are set right, sometimes the SPD can be programmed slightly wrong and needs for the timings to be changed manually in the bios, also check to make sure they are getting the required voltage.

That'd be my guess too. Make sure it's set at 3-4-4-8 in the bios.
 
Thanks for the replies :) . The MB is an Abit AN8-32X. When I had it running in Windows at 250MHz CPU-Z reported that the timings were 3-4-4-8. Would it make a difference if I set these in the BIOS? I had left the voltage at 2.6, but also tried 2.7 with the same results.

I'll try the memtest later - should I try it when running at 250Mhz or 200Mhz?

It's rated at 250mhz so I'd test it at that speed.
 
I have the exact same kit in my system.... doing the exact same thing! Its right weird, wont run with HTT@250mhz with the ram @ 1:1, or at the std HTT of 200mhz, will only run with a 333 divider :confused: But, it will overclock to 263mhz (with a 333 divider) with a HTT of 322mhz... This is on a DFI LP Sli-D.

My ram timings at 263mhz are :- 3-3-3-7. Is this any good as i know F'all about ram timings ???

Very strange... :confused:

I've currently got mine set at what they recommend for the Abit board - 3-4-4-8 DDR400 with 2T command rate. It's stable in Prime95 but I keep getting crashes in WoW where it just bombs out with a page fault.

Think I might have to eBay it and get something else. :(

not really. I have mine set at 1T, 3-4-4-8 and 254 mhz and its been primed 24hour and doesnt fail. no problems here

edit- saw its about the asus board, sorry cant help
