Hi Guys..

Just bought myself a G-sync monitor after using one over the weekend and being blown away..

Got a quick question.. What happens if the FPS goes over the refresh of the monitor? for instance the monitor i am getting is based at 144Hz and i know most modern games will not hit this high but what happens with older games (CS:GO) where i can easily hit over 200fps.. does G-sync simply turn off and you would get tearing again?

I know you should keep v-sync off in game but something like CS:GO has a console command to limit max FPS so is it a good idea to limit it to the max refresh so g-sync stays on?

When you enable G-Sync the V-Sync option in the nVidia control panel changes in how it works. When G-Sync is enabled the V-Sync option when on will limit framerate to the monitor max refresh, when it is set to off framerate will be uncapped with G-Sync applied upto the monitor max refresh and then disengaged above that - so at 145+fps you'd get tearing again but the lowest input latency.

Another option is to use G-Sync with V-Sync (in the nVidia control panel) on and limit the framerate ingame to around 120-135fps this still seems to give the lowest latency outside of uncapped framerate.

Perfect thanks..

So if I set them both to on it will still limit to the max refresh.

For games like csgo it's best to leave it disabled. Let your frame rate run wild.
Csgo input latency and hit reg is all sent to the server in packets and is linked to your frame rate. Locking frame rate down will only give you a disadvantage.

For everything else though enjoy Gsync :D

My friend said this..

He said for games like this using the ULMB was a better option?

G-sync... all i can say is wow...

Bought a 35 inch superwide running g-sync at 200hz and it feels so much different.. movement in games is so smooth..

So did some playing last night with various games and love the smoothness of it all..

Might knock it back to 144hz though as cant see much difference at 200.. also 200 pushes my gfx card heat up.. even though its a water cooled gfx it still hits 70+ degrees because of the high refresh...

Used to always run V-sync on 60 hz so used to temps never going above 60.

It's that a custom loop? The refresh rate is irrelevant, you should never be hitting 70c on a 980Ti under water.

What's your set up?

No custom loop its one off the all in one water cooled (Inno3d Variety)

I had my Pc on a custom bench on top of my desk and it never went over 60ish with FPS locked at 60.

Bench has been moved inside a kitchen cupboard (don't ask) I have the intake fan on the rad pulling in air from outside i also have 2 fans pulling in air from the front of the cupboard pushing air across the graphics card and two fans at the back of the cupboard pulling air out.

Playing The Division last night @ 2560x1080 with all settings maxed and hitting 72 degrees (FPS was pretty high)

One thing i just remembered is that I think i may have put priority over power rather than temp limit in afterburner which maybe why its going over 70..

It's performing worse than an air cooled card, mate.

Forget the FPS as it means nothing.

Disable Gsync and Vsync temporarily.
Open your most graphically intense game (Witcher 3?)
Pump settings to full/ultra
Make sure there's no frame limit

Leave the game running with the AB overlay showing gpu usage at 99%. No other stat matters, just the usage.

See what you're temperature is after 5 minutes.

Should i had AB set to prioritize power or temp?

I am maybe thinking the fan on the rad aint upto much (cant feel it blowing anything through the fins on the rad) problem with them is the fan is hard wired into the GFX card so are not easily replaced without screwing up warranty

You sure? Because am sure frame rate loads is how much a GPU load is pushed.
For example a 980ti might only need 60% for 60fps while a 970 might need 100% for 60fps

This just am example

I know this is the case as with v-sync on and keeping FPS at 60 no matter what game Temps never went over 60 ( less demanding games temps were lower than that.. )

Its only when i turn off v-sync and put more demand on the game i.e pushing more FPS the temp goes over 60...

For instance with G-sync on / V-sync on pushing 200fps on CS:go temps hover around 55.. but put something like The division on with max settings pushing 100fps and temps hit 70.. GPU usage would have been much higher on the division than CS:GO

I will give it a go tonight with withcher 3 or something similar and see how i get on..

String here are the results of a 5 minute run in witcher 3 with v-sync / g-sync off

Max temp was 78 Degrees

fan curve i have set-up as 30/30 40/40 50/50 60/60 70/70 80/80

Even at 100% fan speed it does not feel like the fan is passing air through the rad.. although if i blow smoke through it it gets sucked in.. this is not the same as my two fans on my CPU rad which i can definatley fee the air passing through

heres the system..

two intakes on the front.. two intakes to the right for the CPU rad.. two outakes from the rear and the intake on the gpu rad

not sure how to tell if the pump is running.. sometimes i can hear it swoosh but not heard it in a while

Could you run that test again, but this time leave it for closer to half an hour? Obviously, abort if the temperature goes past 85c. I'd be interested in just how hot the card will go in such a relatively short space of time.

Touch the rad with your hand before you start the test, and touch it when the temperature is back at the high 70s. See if the rad feels much warmer.

BTW, I would say if the fan is running at all then you can probably rule it out as any air movement is usually enough.

rad gets really hot when gaming... just checking the power cables as it has one for the rad although i am sure that's also power the fan so if that was not working then it wouldn't be spinning.

strange right now its idling at 26 degrees in windows

ok tried another fan made no difference to the temps..

just shook the rad and heard some movement so now wondering if the pump has failed

Any improvement to temperatures?

i think it a loose connection on the pump.. the division was no change sitting around 74..

then booted up battlefront and started to hear a warring noise like the pump was kicking in... for about 5 mins happily sitting as 60-63 then all of a sudden shot up to 75 on the same map..

This is getting strange..

it seems to be game specific...

so i just booted up dead space 3 and could clearly hear the pump coming on... temp sitting around 60-63

if i boot up witcher or division i cant hear the pump and temps over 70..

only difference with the games is the directx version they use

man feel like such a doghnut... just turned the fan around so its blowing the hot air from the rad out of the case and witcher temps went down to max 63...

previusly all the was happening was the hot air from the rad was being blown across towards the gfx card
