G-Sync problems

980GTX, CPU 2600k, g-sync monitor is XB270HU. G-sync seems to be very hit and miss. Only rec'd my monitor a couple of days ago... On the latest driver 358.50 Win7 64-bit. System & O/S in great shape. Everything was running very nicely on my U2412 60hz 1920x 1200 panel.

Recently rec'd my new G-sync monitor - I have it set in the XB270HU panel set to 144mhz, the gsync driver enabled in the settings

IN nVidia CP - Vertical Sync - set to application setting.

But i'm not happy with the way things are going.

Example games

COD BLOP2 2 - the best so far.... Sometimes runs at 130fps locked, perfectly smooth, sometimes its at 80fps with stutter.

COD MW - whilst smooth runs locked at 60fps, though in the settings i have the monitor set to 144hz and variable refresh rate

MotoGP15 - sometimes stutters - sometimes doesn't, tried every setting under the sun, can't narrow it down. Replays and pausing the game silky smooth, but playing the game the track stutters here and there. FPS seems locked at 60fps. Again in the game settings i've tried enabling vsync and disabling. One time it may be better and another time worse with the option enabled.

BTW using FRAPS is confirming these frame rates... Also have g-sync on overlay, enabled in the nVidia control panel, during my testing.

Grid Autosport - 60fps seems locked even with vsync off in game, regardless of the fact i have the refresh rate in settings set to 144hz

GTA V - seems to run at 50-60fps ish with stutter. though i swear that game was better before i upgraded the driver.

SFIV Ultra - Benchmarks at around 210fps (moves too fast to tell of any tear) During game play, if vsync off, screen tear is present.. runs at 60fps, with vsync on, runs at 55fps and no screen tear.

Why did i just spend $750+ on this 144mhz panel ? if i'm just getting 60hz gaming other than BLOPS2 ?

Anyone have any idea what's going on here ?

I don't know, screen runs perfect in Windows... Games its like hit and miss, me questioning if its stuttering.. TBH this is no better than the occasional stutter that v-sync use to give.. I don't know if my gsync module on my new monitor is faulty or the latest driver is at fault... I was expecting a variable frame rate with perfect smoothness, providing it stayed over 50fps ish... But that's far from the case.. Seems every game has an issue here or there with some bad stutter.

Running blurbusters, in the browser, the screens locks at 144hz and the UFO is perfectly smooth.

The nVidia pendulum demo is working perfect ! as in, i can whack the max fps to 144, and its variable between 60fps to 144fps with no tear or no stutter whatsoever.. Basically as i'd expect gsync to work.... So i know its working sorta !! But i didn't drop this much money to watch a pendulum swing smoothly.

Anyone else got gsync and running fraps ? what results are you getting ?

Fair enough... My help stops there then!

It sounds like G-Sync just flat out isn't working.

I turn vsync off in the control panel, gsync on and cap my frame rate to 143 in afterburner, works a treat for me. I play a lot of BLOPS 2 and set the fps to 124, apparently that's the best for it online.

it seems things are improving for me, by rolling back to driver version 355.98.

COD MW i had the frame rate capped at 60fps, so changed that to zero and its now running at 144fps no tear.

SF4 is still 60fps but no vsync and no tear.. Perhaps that game is capped on purpose ?

BLOPS2 is now 144fps

MotoGP15 seems to be running at around 110-120 fluctuating, but smoother and no tear.

So it seems things are improving. Still got more testing to do....

My settings:

G-Sync FS/Windowed

NCP max monitor refresh.

NCP Vsync on

Tried NCP Vsync off but strange things happened in JC2-artifacts and top half of screen stopped rendering(don't know if that's a game issue or a G-Sync related bug).

In NVidia control panel

Set G-sync as Monitor Technology

Preferred refresh rate to highest available

Vertical Sync to either ON (this will then put v-sync on when hitting max refresh rate but G-sync below this) or OFF (will tear you go above max rate but G-sync below max rate).

Do not set to let application decide.

Always turn V-Sync off in game.

And make sure G-Sync is turned on in the NVidia control panel (I only do full screen as I had issued with using some video capture software with windowed and full screen mode).

Have you tired running the g-sync demo too see how that performs?

Some games are capped at 60fps, and may be forcing V-Sync on so wont play nicely with G-sync when you have the refresh rate set to 144Hz, you could try altering the rate to 60hz which may help.

My first thought was are you running SLI? But I see you're not.

If you do a search for my username and SLI / Gsync/ stutter you will find lots of posts!

In summary, I did a load of research and testing, and some games just don't get on well with Gsync and SLI but there are some bizarre workarounds you can do.

In single card mode though I never had/ have any issues with Gsync, so not sure what your issue could be sorry.

^ Even games that are FPS locked to 60 (Assassins creed Black Flag is another example) it shouldn't/ doesn't have any ill effects with gsync with regards to stutter, or anything. And especially if only using one GPU.

By the way to the OP, I don't have most of the games you list but here is my personal GTA 5 fix for butter smooth performance. This is for using SLI and Gsync (as on one card I don't need to do this) but it may help your situation, worth a try....

Run in game at 60hz via the graphics menu (actually says 59) and use bandicam, RTSS or a similar frame rate limiter prog TO LIMIT FRAMERATE TO 59! It's a fix that works for a number of games i.e. limit to one under the monitor refresh rate. In these cases it's not to remove 'lag', though it's a beneficial side effect. It's purely to remove any and all stutter from certain games. GTA 5 being one of them. For me it makes it 100% stutter free. I'm obsessive compulsive about stutter and judder in games and getting rid of it, trust me.

i was going to say my stutter issues were gone.. Fired up F1 2012, butter smooth, FPS varying from 100 ish to 144.

Threw on GTAV as this was one i was having problems with last night, and yep clear and present stutter... Actually worse than i've ever remembered it. Tried vsync on & off, 144hz and 60hz, not tried bandicam or RTSS yet, but i think that'll be my next move... Swear it was smooth when i first got my screen though...

Hope i get that one going, as thats one of my most liked titles..

How do you check that?

i just used the cable that came with the monitor, so pretty sure its 1.2

Anyway, for most things its working butter smooth, just annoying that its not on a couple of my titles.

Sort of thought g-sync would be the solution to my stutter annoyances... Not fix some and then introduce some.

I did the same, but I thought reading that there was a way to check?
