G3258 still a great budget gaming chip?

Interesting debate this. I've seen the G3258 recommended to people in spec threads, so I thought I'd look into it myself for an inexpensive "upgrade".

Single core performance is much higher on the pentium compared to my i7 860, but overall performance is just about the same (according to cpuboss).

If used just for gaming with my R9 290, and overclocked to 4.0GHz, would this be an upgrade at all?

Nope! Stick with the 860 and clock it up to 3.6GHz or more. The sort of games that don't benefit from a quad core will be fine and the games that do benefit from a quad will be much better:) fantastic chip that.

I have a second rig with the pentium k and a gtx 770 for my kids and can honeslty say its a cracking little rig, every game they play has been fine so far from what i have seen, but granted the games my son is getting into are a few years old, with the like of the fallout series and farcrys. The good thing though is say in a year or so will be able to pop in a decent i5 or i7.
