Interesting debate this. I've seen the G3258 recommended to people in spec threads, so I thought I'd look into it myself for an inexpensive "upgrade".
Single core performance is much higher on the pentium compared to my i7 860, but overall performance is just about the same (according to cpuboss).
If used just for gaming with my R9 290, and overclocked to 4.0GHz, would this be an upgrade at all?
Nope! Stick with the 860 and clock it up to 3.6GHz or more. The sort of games that don't benefit from a quad core will be fine and the games that do benefit from a quad will be much better
