The polling is different at stock but the 518 can easily be polled to 500hz with a 1kb peice of software in 2 seconds.
The G5 has weights to alter the weight of your mouse, whether this is useful or not is debatable!
Logi mx518 is seemingly better value for money. Both very similar really! just one costs a fair bit more.

Had a G5 for just over a year now, awesome mouse, truly awesome. Updating it with the new G5 with 2 thumb buttons. My advice is the new G5 all the way.

Not sure on exact differences between laser and optical but i've read an article on esreality recently suggesting the 518's older optical is better for low sens gamers. For casual gaming though i imagine nobody would care which! Neither of them lose tracking. £30 or so for a 518 does seem steep to be fair for a mouse thats now pretty old!!

Not used the G5 or mx518 but from what i've seen i'd say go for the 518 as it's cheaper and, as you've read, has the superior optical sensor!
If money's no object then i'd say the deathadder. Yes it's expensive but it is the fastest most accurate tracking mouse i have ever used.
Only fault i could see with it was the height at which it stopped tracking. On the razer site it states it has one of the lowest tracking cut off heights - useful for when you have to lift the mouse up to re-sweep for a big turn in a fps!
Rather ironically i found that this was the opposite as it gets almost 1cm of the mat and is still tracking!!! I'm sure a firmware update will sort this though so i'd recommend it regardless as it is excellent.
I have also used the razer diamondback and copperhead. I owned an OCUK b-grade copperhead (blue) first then changed (needed something red to match my eclipse keyboard but couldn't afford a new copperhead) to a diamondback. I expected a drop in performance going from an expensive 2000dpi lazer mouse to a cheaper 1600dpi optical but that is not what i saw.
Lazer's just not there yet. Go optical - you wouldn't be dissapointed in any of the mice below:

Even the Krait if it's anything like the Diamondback!
Or if you wanted a white mouse the Razer Pro v1.6

I think you hit the nail on the head there GT, I think I have come to the conclusion that the G5 isn't worth the extra because the MX518 outperforms it. The Deathadder gets superb reviews but I'm not sure on the design of it, it looks quite retro and its another £13. I think I will go with the MX518 because its optical, has very good reviews and is the cheaper option.
