G5 or MX518

I ordered my deathadder yesterday, its not really that expensive if you look around, managed to get it for £40 delivered
Wow! Nice price! :cool:

All they need to do now is produce a red one and i'm sorted! ;)

Come on razer... you can do it!

Its just being able to 'up' the hz.

All these gaming firms like razer etc brag about how their mouse does 500hz / 500hz polling out of the box. In reality they can all do it with a peice of software. It makes the mouse movement feel a lot less laggy / more responsive and its perfectly safe as long as you havent got an absolutely accient pc.

The programs called 'usb mouserate switcher'

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/USB-Mouserate-switcher-Download-18834.html

All the newer logi mice seem happy to sit at 500hz (mx300 ..g1..g3...mx510 ..mx518 etc) but very few will do 1000hz and its probably best avoided.

Difference between standard 125hz (on most mice ive mentioned above) and 500hz is pretty big and i'd have thought most people could feel the difference, especially in first person shooters.

If theres any problems you can restore to stock, i'd definately advise against setting it above 500hz though as you could run into problems on 99% of mice, ie mouse not responding etc!

There is a separate program you can get called mouserate something else which will show what your hz actually are to make sure its working properly.

mx518 definately works @ 500hz no probs.

the mx518 ticks every box. its the best mouse for a reasonable price and has been for quite some time now. you wont find a bad word about them tbh

Also 1000hz really isn't the holy grail.

Its like in the olden days when people used the ps2 socket before usb mice at standard 40hz, then usb's came out @ 125hz. Then ps2rate allowed people with ps2 mice to go from 40hz to 200hz using ps2rate. In these days the difference was huge.

40hz = nasty bad!!
125hz= standard but pretty awful when you know better!
250hz= a lot smoother
500hz= improved and about perfect
1000hz= possibly overkill, be surprised if many people could tell the difference between 500hz / 1000hz as its already ultra smooth.

People who buy mice because they have a laser (OMFG LAzzzZZoroRRorss !!!one!!! comes to mind) really dont know much about mice IMO and unless it comes with a superior sensor to actually appreciate the move over to laser you are just buying the hype.

Indeed considering the G5/G7 come with inferior setup (how can not having thumb buttons be an advantage?!?) then the MX518 has been the best Logitech mouse to have. In reality is there any point in getting more than 1600dpi accuracy other than to list it as a spec on the box?

I cant comment on the latest razors or M$ mice as Ive not used them (razors dont seem to be ergonomically friendly, while M$ mice seem a bit too big)...

Yes the new G5 comes with the thumb buttons now, but for the price difference the technology improvement isnt that noticable.

No problem :D

Nah totally different things. Mouse polling makes the mouse movement more fluient/smoother. As i say the newer mouse are coming with them set high as standard as a selling point but any mouse pretty much from the last 3-4 yrs from a decent make like razer/logi/ms can do it @ 500hz. I've just always been advised against 1000hz.

Well it did something to my sensitivity. In Windows it seemed a lot slower moving/less sensitive. I notched it up slightly to what I'm used to. I'll have a bash on COD later on and see how it affects accuracy. :)

There was someone one here who found a place where you could pick up a Deathadder for £35 delivered. Raikiri was his name I think. Might be worth sending him a PM if your after a Deathadder.

Me I got a MX518 and think its wicked. :)

So I take it polling rate is not the same as sensitivity?

I might give it a go, thanks for the info bobert50.
Basically mouse sensitivity is how accurate the mouse is physically - its resolution effectively (how minute a change is required for it to determine one unit of movement) and is measured in dots per inch.

Mouse polling though is how often these changes (relative or absolute) are sent to the PC for it to represent the physically movement of the mouse. Its measured in hz (cycles per second) and generally higher is better until a point where the CPU overhead just mitigates the benefit (a form of mouse lag so to speak)

In reality overall mouse sensitivity is a function of both of these (i.e. it doesnt matter how accurate your mouse is if your PC doesnt ask enough times what is happening)...

Hope that makes sense

That makes sense yeah, cheers. It's pretty much as I understood it.:)

Well my MX518 has arrived today, and what can I say - very impressed. It looks and feels superb. Its a big improvement over my older Logitech mouse, just trying to get used to the high sense ;)

Get a mousemat, not using one is sacrilidge :(

Think I might fashion myself a homemade icemat, apparently it isn't too hard to do, it's relatively cheap and you can make them much bigger :p
