Hi,
My plans for a iMAC G5 2.1 20" came to an halt last week because of a design issue with the 20" model producing a high pitched buzzing while plugged in and turned off. I have an option to purchase a Powermac G5 1.8 Single is there going to be any real world differnce between this and a iMAC G5 2.1?

I am intending to use it for photo editing/batch processing and movie editing. I know nothing about macs. Both will have 1 Gig of ram.

Also how loud are these powermacs. I'm hoping a single will be pretty quiet?

Might be best off posting in another part of the forum mate ;)

It might have something to do with photo editing, but you won't get the same expertice in this section of the forum as you might in others :)

I don't know about the performance but my friend has a Powermac and it is very noisy. The fans seem spin up at random times, like when we're watching a movie or something and they're loud. Might be because I'm used to my Mini though.

I dont think there would be any realworld difference. The powermac has a faster bus speed so would run very similar speeds to the imac.

My powermac dual 1.8 is pretty much silent all the time, never had the fans spin up really.

I use two G5's on a regular basis, my own dual 2GHz one, and my office dual 1.8GHz... neither can be described as noisy, at all.

Unless the processors are working hard, there's next to no fan noise at all, the fans spin at ~300rpm.

Personally, I'd try and get hold of a dual G5 as opposed to a single, the later ones are a bit crippled (i.e. bus at only 600mhz as opposed to 900mhz in the Rev. B single 1.8 - matching the iMac).

Dunno what that's all about then, maybe he's knackered it somehow.
