GA-P35C-DS3R & Realtek Problem

Hi, I'm having a problem with my front panel sound, spec is:

GA-P35C-DS3R
LianLi PC7
Vista 64

I have the latest driver for the Realtek - R178 and I can get sound in both rear and front panel connections.

However, I can't get realtek to auto detect the front panel when I connect something. I've tried all sorts of settings, but cannot get the rear to automatically mute when the front is connected. It either ignores the front altogether or thinks something is connected when nothing is!!!

This is such basic functionality! but I can;t seem to solve it, has anyone else come across the same issue?

Double check the front panel connections with the connections used on the motherboard. I bet they don't match correctly.

or to put it another way -are the FP connectors AC'97 or HD?
