GA P55A UD4 Cold Boot Problem

I have completed an upgrade with i5 on a GA P55A UD4. It is running absolutely fine but at first start up it always hangs at Windows 7 splash screen and I have to power it off. Usually it starts ok after that and runs all day even with reboots etc.

System powered by OCZ GameXStream 600w PSU (From previous system). (BoughtJune 07 from OCUK)
i5 750
OCZ Gold Low Voltage 1600 4gig
Win 7 64
2 x old 8800GT's in SLI Latest drivers (Not ones that fry your card!)
No other cards
Stock settings EXCEPT ram set to 1333 and 1.6v and QPI to 1.21 as per specs (actually specced to 1600). Many sites suggest this. "Optimised" defaults seem to load ALL ram to 1066 no matter what it's speed. Memtest completed at these settings.
PSU SHOULD be adequate according to Antec PSU calculator (380W minimum)

Latest f9 BIOS
Run Memtest 86+ for 10 passes witout incident
Tried one 8800GT on its own in primary slot. No improvement. Will try other 8800GT to eliminate Graphics cards as problem.

Have to wait till next morning every time change anything as once it starts it runs fine.

Very occasionally get a BSOD 9c Machine_Check_Exception which doesn't help much. Mostly it just siezes before the little multicoloured window can form propely.

Tried tweaking CPU voltage up a bit. Started crashing Assassins Creed II after that even tho the voltage was only 1.25 from 1.23! Back to defaults.

After that will have to buy a PSU to try and poss hard drive with fresh install of Windows. All costs which may well be unnecessary

More I think about this the more I think PSU. Even though it's an adequate PSU IU hadn't quite realised it was 3 years old.

Sorry to hear it mate.

Just done a similar build myself (i5 750/GA-P55A-UD4 updated to f7 bios/Corsair PC3-12800C9/Radeon 5770/Win7 x64).

Differences...
Using optimized defaults in bios set ram at 1333mhz for me.
No other bios tweaks other than AHCI is on, com/lpt/usb3/sata3/floppy off.
PSU is (brand new) Corsair 650W modular.

A couple of weeks in and not had any issues so far here.

cheers

Sounds exactly the same. I also tuned ACHI on. Might check HDD is ok. I have system on a 150 SATA II and games on a 500Gb Sata II. The 150Gb is a couple of years old. Might do a disk check or try reinstalling Windows.

Its all the more annoying because my son finished Assasins Creed II on it no probs. Plays TF2 and any game you throw at it all day without a hitch. It's just this flipping cold boot issue! Assasins Creed II is one bautiful game btw

Tried booting into safe mode this morning. BSOD Machine_Check_Exception 9c.Second attempt booted successfully. This means its not drivers/ethernet or anything. Any OCUK staffers out there any clues where to go next here without dropping another £150 on elimination of suspects on this? This is a brand new mobo, RAM, i5 processor.

You still not got any answers on this fella

A quick google throws up a few possible answers to this but not one definitive one :(

Anyone else with any thoughts?

Thanks. I was wondering what "chipset" drivers to install for the motherboard? I have read that Windows 7 64 will install automatically any drivers needed, but Gigabyte still lists a whole load of drivers etc for Win 7 64 on this Mobo. I don't want to RAID and have ACHI enabled. Anyone any pointers?

I appreciate anyones help but also kniow I have to get to the bottom of it myself. Also the machine is perfectly usable once it's started. Also a pure gaming rig so not mission critical.

Intel INF along with latest Realtek Audio and LAN - Gigabyte's website.
Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers (newer than the ms ones) - Intel's website.

Nothing works so far. Did a scandisk which was ok. Dont think its HDD because its too stable once it's running. Reinstall Windows 7 next then new PSU.

Eliminated Graphics as a cause. Next
1.Disconnect IDE CD Drive
2. Disconnect gaming hard drive try boot with Windows drive only
3.Switch RAM again!
4. Try Optimised Defaults again!
5. Disconnect USB/Card reader front panel.
6. Reinstall Windows 7 on a new HDD
7. Replace the PSU

Each time I do these things I have to wait, leave the PC off over night to replicate the problem. If the PC has been started it will start all day. Need to leave off for a long time to reproduce trhe problem. So far hangs at rainbow window splash screen EVERY morning on first boot WITHOUT FAIL. So I have a week of testing ahead of me.

Absolutely nothing on Windows logs when this happens. Windows never knows it happens. Tried bypassing surge protectors. No diff. Have to try something else and wait until tomorrow morning again! No wonder OEMS don't want to troubleshoot!

Tried reinstalling windows on a brand new drive. Locked up at the loading splash screen! Not that then. Or drivers of any description. Next stop PSU then RMA!

Completely defeated. Havn't tried PSU yet. Might just learn to live with it. Having to start it twice on first boot is no big deal. If anyone comes up with a solution let me know. Over and Out!

Hi

I know this threads quite old. But I'm thinking about this motherboard myself.

Did you ever sort it?

Probably not your problem. But when I re-built my current system in a new case, it started doing exactly this! Turned out that it was the graphics card not seated corrected in the socket. Solved by pulling the card and re-seating it.

Hi. No problem is still there. Nearly a year since I did the build. Locks up at splash screen on cold boot. Restart and its fine all day. Colder weather seems to be worse which makes me think theres a flaw in the motherboard or processor so that whenh its warm its ok. I really can't be bothered doing any more troubleshooting so I'll see if it goes away if I upgrade the graphics or processor at some future date. I've swapped out every single component imaginable by the way so please don't suggest any of that! Latest BIOS made no diff either.

It sounds like PSU to me mate. Seriously, and especially as you said it is worse with cold weather. Did you ever get a chance to swap out a PSU (a newer one). Motherboards as a rule work better when sub-zero, so cold is not going to be an issue. PSU's on the other hand do not like the cold at all. All sorts of things start happening to them when the weather gets cold.

Not convinced about that. Could be tiny crack in the solder somewhere, so that when warm... problem goes away.

Though I agree that it might still be a PSU issue.

Though after a year, I suspect the OP is pretty well fed up of messing around. He certainly has my sympathy.

Mine too. :) Not nice to have kit that does not work perfectly. My thoughts are PSU as I have said but maybe it would be a good idea to actually RMA the board. That way he would know one way or the other.
