Gah Ryanair

Really sorry for your girlfriend mate, terrible thing to lose people so close to you..

I dont agree with Rynairs stance on this at all, shouldnt be as hard as they are making it and to ask for death certificate is shocking..however i dont want to be the bad guy here but...

Thanks. It was a perfectly horrible experience being with her when she got the news, I then persuaded her to go on and had to take her to Dover to catch up with her crew.

Sounds like she left the country knowing her friends were dead already and she must have known if she left there was a strong chance she could miss any funerals?

Had a similar nightmare with EasyJet (not involving deaths) and it was horrendous, all the budget companies are out there for one thing, money, and they dont give a **** how they go about making it.

The number of people claiming they needed to change flights etc or claim refunds due to people needing to get to funerals etc was horrific, since they began insisting on a copy of the death certificate the number has fallen considerably. So sick though it sounds it was it was done to stop people being even sicker and claiming someone had died just so they could get a refund on a cheap flight.

That said I wonder how many people can't face asking for a copy of the death certificate and simply don't bother. Hope she manages to get sorted out but she did make a choice to go knowing what had happened and her return date/time, i'm not blaming her but I think you may want to consider that before blaming the air line.

There's a difference between being a cheap airline that charges extras and demanding a death certificate to do something that isn't losing them any money. He'll be paying for another flight, it's not like he just wants a flat refund. They're out of line, however cheap they are.
well yes, but if a ticket explicitly states that it's nonrefundable nonexchangable, too bad.
surely you can get a flight back to wherever you're going from wherever you are on another airline?

obviously i feel for the OP's and his gf's situation, but **** like this happens all the time and unfortunately it costs. it's the same with every airline. In case, the op is telling the truth, but people could try things like this all the time. how is the airline to know if they are genuine or not?

Or maybe like the above poster, a lot of people have decency and would never approach a grieving family to get a death certificate for some money at such a stressful and upsetting time.

The airlines know this and will undoubtedly be playing off it

On topic - all air lines ask for this and have done for quite a few years.

Off topic:

I was on a Ryanair flight a few weeks ago to Riga and back for a stag do.

On the way back you had all the stag parties feeling rough and trying to sleep.

They would NOT stop trying to sell things on the tannoy. First the perfume, then the electric cigarettes and so on. It was like every minute of the journey was planned and they just had to hawk goods one after the other. They went on for 10 minutes each time just waffling on about the product about all the features blah blah.

In the end some people started screaming 'SHUT THE **** UPPPPP' and before long it became a big competition to see how quickly the whole cabin could get the staff to shut up as so many people were shouting that you could not hear the tannoy at all.

That sounds a bit harsh tbh, I spent hours persuading her to go, and then took her to Dover to catch up with her crew. We had no way of knowing at all that the funeral would be so soon.

Obviously thats what they rely on. It's more the issue that I've been given one postal day to produce a death certificate that gets me.

i can't understand why people constantly complain about them. if you don't like them, don't use them.
i don't like them, and i have no intention of ever setting foot on one of their aircraft, but i have very much respect for Mr O'Leary. The guy's a genius

As a customer it's our right to complain, and if you've never used them before you may not know what the company are like to fly with. Sometimes there is no other choice if they fly from your nearest airport to your desired destination.

I don't know why you respect him so much, he's just a cut throat capitalist.

Sorry, didnt mean to offend..but things move quite fast these days as long is there isnt a long investigation into the deaths so i would have thought a funeral within a week would have been pretty normal/expected. Everyones opinion will be different on this, i would have went on the trip too if it was me, its probably what her friends would have wanted aswell.

Well there was a police investigation, and two people have been charged with death by dangerous driving, these things tend to slow them down.

She didn't want to go, but a few of us persuaded her to try and take her mind off things.

It's not your fault. She needed the break, it's just unfortunate timing. Good luck with it, though. Might it be worth considering just booking a low cost flight out of wherever she is and taking the hit? Would be able to get one out of Europe for ~£50.

I don't suppose any travel insurance covers her? Shocking news to be honest. My utmost sympathy to the family.

M.
The travel insurance would also probably require a death certificate too - I used to work in a travel insurance call centre and actually had the great job of asking people to do stuff like this. Didn't stay too long.

Ryanair are the biggest bunch of immoral ****'s going.

I remember I tried to change some 30 quid flights 5 mins after booking them (don't ask - women change their minds like the wind direction).

I basically did all the work with no interaction from any staff on the website, and they wanted 80 quid for the privilege.

Get ****ed you bunch of skankfaced money rinsing ****ers.

I live for the day I can royally screw that company over.
