GALAX GeForce GTX 970 Infinity Black Edition coil whine :(

Wow. Looks like this problem is more wide spread. Thanks for saving me more hassle. Just requested a refund instead. Would really like to hear from Gibbo. Just wanted to know if he's seen one from this batch that doesn't whine? Just seems weird that with 3-4 of us in this thread alone getting replacements that whine exactly the same. You'd have thought at least one person here would have got a decent replacement

Unless you are getting each other's returns? Food for thought.

Mine was factory sealed. Had it not been sealed I would have been convinced I just got the same card back. I've had coil whine before and been fine with it. But these cards were on a whole different level. Like easy to hear the changes in frequency from 12 feet away. Hopefully we've all just been very unlucky as it sounds like there's tonnes of people happy with these cards.

Thankfully ocuk have been very quick with their handling of this for me.

had two 970 G1's RMA'ed for coil whine took my money back! turned me off the 970's.

As mentioned above, would be good to get some input from Gibbo himself! Is this just a dodgy batch?

Well just a quick update I've just requested a refund because this card i got as a replacement is even worst, where as the before i would get coil whine in games i now also get it in chrome browser ie if i open my favorites folder or if an advert flashes i now get squeel.

Tbh now i don't think I'll bother taking risk with another 970, just gonna hang on and wait for the 390 & 390X to be released.

I've actually gone back to using my old & trusted whine free 7950 "glad i never sold this now" the 970 pack up ready to be sent back as soon as i receive my RMA.

It's a shame as i really like the GTX970 for what it is but this coil whine saga has really put me off them, as i mentioned just gonna sit back and wait now.

Hi Gibbo, earlier in the thread (page 1 I think) you said that as cards get faster and faster as the clockerate goes up and up in the future coil whine will become more of an issue. If that’s the case why is it’s video cards have this problem yet you don’t read about it happening on motherboards (even low end ones) when CPU’s are overclocked?

im on 3rd card and it still whines, but it is better and does seem to go every now and then. Its a shame this cooler is amazing but its let down by the 970. Sounds like too low amp capacitors why they move.

TBH its all down to cheap components imo!

If they used some decent kit on the cards i bet youd not hear anything, they are aiming for huge profit but i bet it wouldnt cost much more to stick something in there that wouldnt whine...

This this is almost certainly true.

Coil whine (it can be a buzz, a hiss or a high pitch squeal) is caused by a coil (which could be a simple choke, or part of a transformer) passing AC current, which creates a fluctuating magnetic field. This magnetic field can make either the coil winding itself, or the material that it's wound around vibrate. If the coil is well made and mounted to the PCB properly, there should be little or no noise created when in use.

The main reason we were seeing £240 970s is due to these cheap components imo, but now it seems the 970s are all in the £300 area!!

Glad i got mine before the price hike...

It appears that the extra £60 being spent on better quality components is not quite enough (in some cases) !

You're paying (in this case) a premium on a product that supposedly has premium components. From my own experience of owning two of these cards and having coil whine issues (agreed by Gibbo who tested also), that just doesn't seem to be the case. I personally feel that it could be down to a dodgy batch of cards (being only one batch), by that I mean the coil whine technology wasn't implemented & tested properly at factory level before shipment. Instead it was just a case of glue this to that, that'll work.

When I used to get coil whine in TV sets, I used to use a bit of glue (usually nail varnish - not my own !) on the coil, if the windings were visible. Sometimes this would solve the problem, other times the problem was cured by replacing the coil with a new one.

If designed and manufactured correctly, no coil should whine.
