Galaxy Note 10.1 - Dissapointed

I picked up one of these the other day as it is marketed for productivity. I have, however, been left feeling dissapointed. My main idea was to use it in meetings, for updating technical documents and taking notes/diagrams during technical meetings - hence the appeal of the split screen "multitasking" and S-Pen.

The problem is that the software feels Beta. Maybe it is just Android, but here are my thoughts so far:

1. The Samsung mail app on the lock screen does not update the number of emails you have waiting if they are deleted elsewhere. If I receive email during the day and delete it at my computer using Outlook, then the lock screen of the tablet still shows that I have 12 or whatever emails waiting. This is frustrating as you have to unlock the device for it to clear meaning you never know at a glance exactly how many emails you have!

2. On iOS you can see a list of emails/notifications/etc in a list on the lock screen. On this tablet you just see a little notification saying you have a new email with the number of new emails (not always correct due to point 1). The rest of the lock screen is basically wasted space just showing a clock! For a productivity device it is a waste. Maybe there is an app out there that can show a list of waiting emails/notifications on the lock screen?

3. The "multi window" advertised feature only works for a select few Samsung apps. In a meeting today I was taking notes and was being asked what dates were available. I thought "Oooh I can bring up the calendar next to the notes screen" but no, you can't bring up the calendar in multi window mode - WHAT?! The calendar is one of the most used things for productivity! You can only bring up Samsung Internet, Videos, Notes, Gallery and Email. Just the Samsung varieties a lot of which are inferior to 3rd party software versions.

4. Due to the layer on the screen for the S Pen, the screen is not as touch sensitive as other devices I have used. I find myself multiple times having to re-tap the screen harder as my first tap didn't regsiter.

5. When using the Video player there is a new feature where you can open the video as a new window overlayed over the rest of the screen. Pretty cool, but then the video you are watching finishes. You click to bring back the video program and there is no way to go back to the video list! The back button just goes to the home screen and no longer works as intended in the program. Because there is no button within the program to open the video list, you have to quit the program and re-open it to get back to the main menu to select a different video

6. After activating the overlay video mode, you will often find the text and screen has a dark contrast to it. I have to turn the device off and on again to get icons and text looking normal again.

This is after a few days of use... Maybe people can comment on if I am missing something? I was going to buy a Note or iPad 3 and I feel for the price you pay, the Note 10.1 is a dissapointment. The screen resoution is very noticeable after coming from a iPhone 4.

Seems like a few of your problems are lockscreen related. The beauty of Android being you can completely change your lockscreen. Have a search on the market for some lockscreen apps.

Really interested in one of these, but reviews seem very hit and miss! Some people love it, and portray it as a good quality android tablet with some extra features. Other seem to hate it, and show it as a poor quality android tablet, with some extra features that don't work properly/don't add enough to the tablet to make up for the rest.

Shame I can't seem to find anywhere with stock that I can have a play with. Totality, other than the gripes in your OP, how do you find the rest of the tablet?

First thing people say when they pick it up is how cheap it feels and how they are looking for a cheap device for their kids so do I recommend it? I have to correct them and say its a flagship device so not one for the kids!! It has a thin plastic back which flexes which makes people think its cheap :(

A few more things from using it today at work:

1. I have two accounts set up in Samsung mail. Gmail and Work Exchange. I have turned the option off for synching email with work and I cannot hit the refresh button as it says "Email sync is disabled" but alas it keeps receiving email from work whenver I get one despite it being turned off!! The worst part being that the email program on the tablet then shows I have unread messages which have already been deleted on the work laptop.

2. If you open a video via the video player, hit the home button and then turn the device into landscape and then back to portrait the screen text loses anti aliasing or something weird and looks like a lower quality JPG photo. If you open task manager and close the video player then the screen comes back to normal and text looks normal again. I can only assume the video player must run a transparent overlay even when minimised and when you put the tablet into portrait it messes up the overlay?!

3. When using the built in notes program to write stuff the palm recognition works fine (you can tell the program to ignore ALL finger input even when the pen isnt near it) and your palm doesnt cause anything to be shown on the screen if you lift the pen off for whatever reason. HOWEVER as soon as you get near the bottom of the page, your palm hits the notification bar unless you always keep the pen about 1CM from the screen as the bottom does NOT block palm touches (seperate setting to the program) so as you are writing you suddenly have the notification window pop up if you lift the pen for whatever reason such as you are thinking, etc. I have had this happen multiple times now when trying to write on the lower lines in the Note program.

To be honest, for the price I paid, I am taking it back after work. For a premium device it has a lot of niggles and bugs with the Samsung apps which shouldnt exist. The text recognition works great which is what I wanted it for and if it was half the price I could overlook the bugs.

The bugs will be ironed out. 1 thing samsung is good at is noticing what consumers are saying about their products.
I have 4 samsung products here and i must admit they get updated lots because they have there bugs when first released.

Remember too, Samsung also have just been sued for 'robbing' Apples software patents. If you wanted a iPad you should have bought an ipad.

Wow, I thought those days were long gone :(

You sure there's an extra layer (4) on the tablet? Just checked one here and it feels the same as any other to me. The pen detection matrix is under the display/digitizer according to documentation i have here, it's essentially no different to any other samsung tablet display except that it can detect the pen.

I've your taking it back and can wait a couple of months have a look at the ASUS tablet 800 or lenovo thinkpad tablet 2. They both run Windows 8 which should fix some of the software issues your talking about (such as universal side-by-side multitasking), and they also have a wacom digitizer. I think theres some other win8 tablets with wacom digitizers too.

Edit: apparently the asus tablet 800 has been renamed the vivo pad.

I was about to reply the same based on the Note 10.1 we have at work. Also I've been using a Galaxy Note for my main handset for a while and haven't noticed any touchscreen issues whatsoever.
