I've decided i'm moving from my iPhone 4 to an android phone as iPhone5 hasn't impressed me, and the anroid phones seem to do a lot more for cheaper.

These two seem like the best options at the moment, but I'm having trouble deciding between them.

What would be best of these two for a first time android user, and why?

Samsung GS3

Slighty bigger screen, bigger battery, better CPU and GPU, More internal memory options and software upgrades.

Samsung GS3

better CPU and GPU

how so - old A9 vs krait? GPU is worse or better depending on benchmark. Both are fine.

My choice would be the S3 - Getting JB soon as it's excellent in every area from screen, camera to dev support.

When does big = better? I find the SIII too big personally. The battery is a bit of a downer on the T but the CPU is easily equivalent, has upgradeable memory like the SIII, the T has a better camera and sensor, has arguably a better OS eg Android that is closer to stock and looks far better. However a lot of your decision is down to your personal preference really.

^^^ Go evidence that the T has a better camera?

13Mp. Which doesnt mean everything BUT Sony's track record of high quality cameras in phones counts for a lot.
I could look for proof but cant be bothered, would probably stake money on it being better.

Usually SE do have great cameras and especially video recording, haven't seen any comparisons though, will go and have a look now :p They are considered to be the best in this area by a lot of people/review sites.

But yeah, both good phones, personally not keen on the looks of either of them though especially the GS 3.

Battery life, read users reviews instead, not benchmarks for battery life as they aren't accurate for real world usage i.e. just take a look at the S, GS 3 and X battery comparison :p

S4 CPU is better than the exynos quad in performance per core (IMO more important than having an additional 2 cores), power efficiency and heat and the GPU wins some and looses some depending on benchmark, won't notice much difference in real world usage.

Would rather have the screen of the GS 3.

Storage, not really much of a problem as you have SD slot for both.

Software wise, not keen on either of them really, but if I had to choose, it would be SE's skin.

Also SE are better for software updates, only downside is they are very slow :o

GS3 without a shadow of doubt. I have the XS and the camera can produce some good shots and decent video but the camera isn't much compared to the GS3 and other phones. Both my last Sony phones seem to be more noisy than other phones and preform worse in low light conditions. The speed of the camera is shocking on my XS and there seems to a slight yellow tinge. I am sure the XT has improved the camera but willing to bet it probably isn't no better than current older competitors as a whole package.

X10 (camera) - not as good as it could have been
XS - same as above
XT - haven't tried it but reviews do seem to like it

Both the X10 and XS were generally the highest MP cameras when released but I think it shows that MP really isn't everything.

Camera aside do you want to get a phone that is popular and so widely supported by developers, faster in most categories and more future proof, a better screen overall (apart from ppi), a phone that is updated fairly quickly (Jelly Bean is coming out this month - Sony can't decide yet which phones they should release it on), a phone with a better battery, a phone with improved NFC capabilities (if that interests you)?

I sound like a broken record :o:p but this will be my last Sony phone (I promise this time). My XS struggles to run well with the galaxy core live wallpaper and Sony did a fairly poor job with the ICS update.

Xperia T looks worse than the S3 in Photo Quality Comparison link I posted - they tend to over compress photos.

Didn't even realise that gsmarena had that tool :o Is that just a recent addition?

Although would like to see some real world shots instead :p

Also OP, what about the one S, one X+ (when released)?

IIRC Samsung also uses a sensor from Sony, at this point most camera phones are good enough and whatever difference there is its not enough to base your phone buying decision on personally. The S3 also has some really amazing 1080p recording.

I would recommend waiting for the next Nexus phone to show up then pick either that, s3, one x+, or Razr Maxx/HD.

Oh so it's the numbers game. Track record means little, it's what here today that counts.

S3 is no push over in the camera department: http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=1&idPhone1=4899&idPhone2=4238&idPhone3=4369

And the Sony skin is as crap as all of them.

No, its not as I mentioned it doesnt mean everything. Its rather obvious where your loyalties lie, chill, Im not criticising the S3 - it has a great camera Im not knocking it, however I would err that the T probably has the better camera.

Sony skin is a light touch which is why I prefer it - the best being stock obviously but the heaviest are HTC and Samsung Touchwiz.

I wouldn't buy a phone based on ui, I run apex launcher on my gs3 and if I so want can use sony skin and have used lgs ui which is rather nice. Camera wise the gs3 suprised me how good it was, I think all these cameras are that close very little difference.

I have a n8 which is regarded as the daddy when it cimes to cameras but I can't really trll much difference between it and the s3.

I don't have an S3, I have an S2. If the T's camera was actually better I'd agree with you.

I went with the T over the S3 personally - I wrote up a mini review in the Xperia T thread in this section.

Very happy with my choice, feels better built IMO than the S3, better to hold, can't fault the camera at all, or the speed of the device. And yes, I've used an S3 lots, and had one for a few months.

It totally buy a phone on the UI, surely the most important part of every phone? I agree the GS3 has a surprisingly decent camera, my brother has one and I am v impressed. To be fair to the N8, its an old phone now, the 808 is the new Daddy (if you ignore *ahem* Symbian).
