If you were comparing several different systems, what games, demo's or synthetics would be most useful and give meaningful numbers currently?

I don't want to have to purchase games just to be able to run benchmarks unless they're really cheap.

Thanks.

No idea but
Cinebench cpu test
Realbench
3d mark

Are probably the most easily comparable and widely used.. Although they don't translate directly into more FPS in a given game.

When looking at FPS in actual game benches, you only want to be looking at average and more importantly minimum FPS.

3DMark ones are popular. Firestrike and Timespy.

Unigine Heaven and Valley also.

Personally I would say the Unigine benchmarks (Heaven, Valley, Superposition) are the best now and 3DMarks should be considered as alternates as these days they focus too much on (or attributie too much of their score to) the CPU. What I mean is, historical versions of 3DMark used to be about how good a card is or how much power the user tweaked out of it, but with the current version of 3DMark it's more about how much the user spent on their CPU.
