im sure it wouldnt be hard for M$ to impliment a windows update that would enable the xbox 360 controller to act as a mouse using the left analogue stick for movement and A/B for left/right click. unless there is already a way that im missing.
i play mainly football/racing games, so no need for a keyboard and mouse, would be easier if i could also use the controller in windows so i can open different games without getting up. just a thought, maybe im just lazy.

Have you tried Pinnacle Game Profiler software - HERE.

As well as game profiles, you can setup a generic Windows profile to do just what you want.
Is a paid app but for this type of use and games that don't naitively use the MS controller its great.

I definitely recommend Pinnacle Game Profiler. Been using it for a while and there are official profiles for all games and profiles specifically designed for the X-box 360 controller.

for example, i used the Mass effect profile and it was exactly the same as on the 360.

It also has a default windows cconfiguration so that you can use it instead of the mouse on desktop.

downloaded the trial version, but it still doesnt do anything in windows, im guessing i need to make or download a profile?

EDIT : made a profile and works great. awesome app, cheers guys.

EDIT EDIT : ok, was awesome til i launched fifa11 with it, but it doesnt stop when a game loads, so the buttons then are all out for the game :(

ok, so i added fifa11 to the exclusions list, which means now when the game loads pinacle stops, which is good, game works as it should, but when i exit fifa11 pinacle doesnt seem to restart the profile :(

Try creating a profile for Fifa, as in launch from within Pinnacle but do not assign any commands to it.

In theory should work as the fifa profile when activated should pause the windows one and as it has no commands assigned to the joypad should work with fifas native commands.

If still does not work, and you still wanted to use your controller in windows, just create a full mapped profile for fifa, a faff i know but it will work.

Sorry if sounds bitty, doing this from memory as at work at mo.

Another productive afternoon!;)

all sorted for now, i think, just added everything to the exclusion column and seems to be ok, takes a min or so after the game closes before it works as a mouse again but it does happen.
is it quite cpu intense as it seems to be making games lag?

hm, i've never had lag in any games.
don't forget to download profiles from pinnacle forums. some very handy profiles on there. also, they might be able to help you more if you are experiencing lag in games. They helped me when i had install problems on Vista.

I don't think it is very cpu intensive. after a game, i generally leave the game profile on and have never noticed any extra activity at all.

will do.
when you import a profile, does it auto assign it to the games exe? as in, does it just know when the game is launched or do i have to change links?

is a nice piece of software, but i only have the 30day trial :( if pinacle can do it, why cant M$ release a patch/update for it?

in my experience, it will auto assign it to games installed on my c drive, but i have all my steam games on another drive, and i have to assign them myself.
for a profile to work, you have to launch the game through Pinnacle by selecting the profile and then play game.

this seems a tad annoying, even more reason for M$ to just intergrate it into windows, although i guess that wouldnt integrate it into games that dont support it so would still need this.
im guessing 90% of games will support the 360 controller anyway as its part of M$ t&c's for games showing the windows logo or something aint it?

Actually, i've found that it hasn't really been the case recently. games seem to have interfaces specifically designed for a pc mouse/keyboard setup.
For example there is no gamepad support for Either mass effect games, Dragon Age 1 or 2, Elder Scrolls games, Call of Duty, Battlefield. Quite a few GFWL games do have native controller support though.

These are all multiplatfom games as well, so it does seem silly to not have native controller support. But strangely, Crysis was PC only, but had native X-box controller support, with buttons already configured:confused:

I use Xpadder, its free and works as well as Pinnacle, its just a little more fiddly to set up, but has a much smaller footprint on your system.

i used to use Xpadder, but i find that Pinnacle is much better for multi-command buttons such as when you want to, say, set the b button to crouch, and also go prone when you hold it, and also use as return in menus.

might give xpadder a go, dont really want it to do anything but be a mouse in windows and an xbox 360 controller in games. if the game dont support it then fair enough i will use kb/m but its the hassel of going from game to game having to get up and use the mouse.

ok, well, downloaded ASRocks AIWI software, and my iphone is now my mouse :) not quite as easy as it being the 360 controller, but atleast my phone sits next to me and doesnt need a flat surface to run.
