GDC 2008: LucasArts To Develop Multiplatform Titles On PS3 First

http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/2639.html

"Scott Steinberg, SCEA's vice-president of product marketing, reinforced Blackman's statement by saying that most every third-party publisher is now developing their games for the PS3 first. "They all are now, since it's just easier," Steinberg said. Well, things have certainly turned around concerning PS3 development, haven't they?"

Interesting stuff, slowly but surely it looks like Sony are getting there, it's good to here more publishers are now developing multi-platform games on the PS3 first, should help eliminate all the fan-boy arguments as to which title is better, from what I've read it seems that the titles will be practically identical doing it this way around so it's a 'win win' situation using the PS3 as the lead platform, for the developers and also the consumers.

this is good stuff. hopefully this will be an end to some of the crap ports the ps3 has been getting.

Would be interesting to know more about the PhyreEngine, is it a full game engine like UE or just for some of the more basic stuff.?

That article suggests it's a rendering engine, so it's probably just to make it a little easier to put polygons onto the screen.

I think ill take anything they say with a pinch of salt. But, if its true then good for them.

Serious pinch of salt since I was just reading the other day about how companies still shun the PS3 in terms of developing first. Also mentioned a lot at GDC

Selective quoting is a very powerful tool ;)

Not saying it isn't true of course

It's interesting to read on the link given, that Sony's PhyreEngine is multiplatform - PS3, 360 and PC.

Just means more profit at the end of the day, making an engine multiplatform wont be a direct threat to the company. Sony will reap increased capital economical growth and have Sony labels on 360 products.

They are giving the tools away for free, so they don't make any money from them directly. Seems Sony's plan is to make it as easy as possible for developers to make a PS3 versions of multiplatform games.

I would say insomniacs actions of late are more interesting, they have had a interesting R+D section on their site for a while.

http://www.insomniacgames.com/tech/techpage.php

there are some interesting bits in there from SPE usage to Vram and a bit on using SPE's for AA.

e.g. Resistance used 15% of spu's and had a budget of 150mb for textures, R+C on the same engine has twice the spu usage and upto 270mb available for textures. According to the devs R2 will see a equal jump.

And they have recently set-up nocurnal

http://nocturnal.insomniacgames.com/index.php/Main_Page

which will have (hopefully) a whole host of dev resources.

Wouldn't it be wise to have the PS3 the lead platform? As if it is true that is is harder to develop for then you should get that out of the way first then move it over to the 360.

I don't think that really makes sense, the consoles are so different that either way it is difficult to port from one to the other I believe.

You would think it would be wise just looking at the results of games where the PS3 has been the lead platform. Developers are trying to sell as many copies of their games as possible and the better the game on both platforms the more likely it is to sell more copies.

Well apparantly if you use the PS3 as lead platform then the 360 one isn't too difficult to port, which is why games turn out better on both. Whereas the other way round is a pain in the ass.
