Used to have this problem with Mafia.
 I had no such problem, and I have never installed any new codecs, or bothered updating WMP. Did you install Patch 1.3?
I think (uncertain) that Mafia uses Bink, but I think you don't need any Bink codecs for the video to run in-game. You could try downloading the Rad Video Tools: The RAD Video Tools (From this page: Bink Downloads ). Maybe it'll work now. Mafia is an awesome game, so it's worth all the trouble to get it working.

Basically guys (if you look at my links) M$ used to package the Intel Indeo drivers with Windows XP until Win XP SP1 came out, where they decided (for whatever reason) not to license these and so for any PC user with a service packed version of Windows XP these arent included.

Its the exactly the same for the Java VM, where before M$ provided it within Windows XP, but you now need to install it seperately yourself. If you originally installed Windows XP (pre-SP) then it will contain the Indeo drivers, even after installing SP1/2 post-install.

Indeed technically making your own slipstreamed CD wont make a difference either since the Indeo drivers will be already be within the code base. This only effects people with a Windows XP CD that contains SP1/SP2 directly from M$...
