Hey guys, just needing a hand on what software to use for recording PC gameplay? :) I've already checked out Fraps and I don't like it, the file sizes are HUGE for such little time of recording, I was thinking of doing a YouTube channel so 1gb maximum video's D: if anyone has any advice lemme know?

Play Claw came highly recommended before Fraps last time I was looking for game recording software, it was highly touted as not dropping the frame rates of the game as much as Fraps when recording.

Try this, most people use it for streaming on twitch, but I believe it also has a recording feature: http://obsproject.com/

Have to say i use it my self and only issue i had was it limits one of the graphics card's, Seem they are not going to work on sli/cross fire support.

I have tested many things over the year Dxtory is good yes,
Shame i did not come across this until i paid for fraps.

But now i just use MSI Afterburner

As you can see here it looks ok,

Now i record using the following settings on to an SSD drive,
Hard drive was not able to keep up with these settings.

Video format = MJPG compression
98% quality
Full frame
Framerate 40
Framerate limit disabled

Then i use Any video converter to change it to .MKV files to upload.
That file was 33 Gig before i converted it and 1.3 after and still looks ok.
Settings i use in any video converter.

Output profile = Matroska Movie .MKV
Video codec = xvid
Frame size = 1920 - 1080
Video bitrate = 12000
Video framerate 30

Sorry bit long winded.

I use Dxtory, best one I've used. If you 'search around' you can find it for free ;)
I record using the Lagarith codec in 720p, and a 8 minute video was around 7.8GB. After, I put it into After Effects, added a sharpen filter and rendered - this dropped the size by about 1GB. Finally, I compress using HandBrake and the final video size was around 200MB, with a very, very minimal quality decrease.

I've tried pretty much everything out there and FFSplit rates pretty good if your looking for something free.

As others have said though, Dxtory is pretty much the daddy atm.
Yanks the video right off the graphics card buffer, it doesnt really get any better.
Sure you have to pay for it but for the paltry sum of £25 is well worth it.
And no you cant get it "free" LukieBoy007, we'll will have none of that talk please

From this information, I went and bought Dxtory, can anyone reccomend good settings for it? Also programs to compress the video with none to very small quality drops? Thanks guys! :)

Look at my post earlier. Use Lagarith codec, put in After Effects and add sharpen filter, put into Handbrake and compress. 7.8GB > 200Mb in the end with very minimal quality loss :)

Advocate of Dxtory here, but I've also tried the new MSI Afterburner and it works with the Lagarith codec now, so for a free product it's excellent and will do everything you need.

As for editing, I tend to use Virtualdub.
