Game to follow on from Dragon Age

Neverwinter Nights 1 + 2, both excellent games, first one is a must play.

Baldur's Gate I + II (with expansions) 4 pack can be had for £5-10 these days. You can even mod it so either;

BG I + Exp + BG II are put into one bit game using the BG II engine (Baldur's Gate Trilogy) or Play BG I + Exp on the BG II engine (TUTU)

Spellforce: Order of Dawn (Spellforce 1) and Spellforce 2. Very similar kind of games + there's loads of add-ons so quite a bit of life in these. In fact having a quick look there is Spellforce Universe which says it includes all spellforce games + add ons so may be worth a look. They're a few years old now but may be worth a look.

What did you find wrong with NWN2?

Apart from the rubbish engine that performed like a dog, gameplay-wise I found it to be just as good as NWN1.

NWN2 with Dragon Age graphics would be awesome!

Maybe try Star Wars: KOTOR 1 or 2. They haven't aged too badly and are done by Bioware, so probably pretty similar. They are both simply amazing games.

Well RPG stands for Role-Playing Game (as i'm sure you know ><). But a lot of it is just Role Playing 'Level Up' methods onto an FPS game. Fallout 3 is pretty slim as far as actual Role Playing goes, especially with the level 30 Cap where you only have a role for the first half of the game and eventually turn into a master of all skill lines.

Well, most FPS games don't have so many dialogs, NPCs, as complex an inventory/skill system, as much open-endedness in terms of mission selection, or as many ways of achieving objectives without using force. FO3 isn't just a standard FPS with levelling up (Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy would be an example of such a game).

As for your role becoming diluted as your develop, that's true to some extent, but then to be honest in many games of this ilk you can create 'balanced' characters. In Vampire Bloodlines it was similar, I started off as a Melee character but developed my ranged abilities later in the game. In KOTOR II I was pretty much neutral alignment and completed the game without changing to a prestige class.

If you think about it, it's actually fairly understandable that a very high level character should have the capability to be good at multiple disciplines.

Essentially, one could argue that the player's role has developed throughout the game, just as our role in the real world changes throughout our lifetime. A guy who started out as a childhood pickpocket may develop into a charasmatic rock star, or a feared military leader.

So just finished dragon age (including soldiers peak and shale)

Looking for another game to get to follow it, a bit wary of rpg's as i don't think there are many which can follow in it's wake?

Mass Effect+ME2 maybe?
Fallout 3 might be worth a shot

Without knowing what it was about DA that appealed it's difficult to know what to recommend, but that's never stopped me before ;)

I didn't play Mass Effect until this summer, how good is it? Excellent, it totally exceeded all my expectations. Combat becomes dull and repetitive but the characters and story carry it through.

I'll give a +1 to The Witcher(RPG+Action). Spellforce 1 (RPG+RTS high-bread) too, I thought the sequel had been made way to 'approachable' aka dumbed down.

I found Fo3 much more humorous and interesting than Oblivion, ymmv.

Two personal stalwarts not yet mentioned:
Vampire The Masquerade (VTM): Redemption. If you can find it. RPG, party combat and more cheese than you can shake a cheese stick at.
VTM: Bloodlines. More recent than the above, £15 on Steam, and one of my all time favourites. Playing as a Malkavian is awesome and in spite of reports of bugs and crashes the only complaint I have about this game is it's too short.
