gamedaily: Top 10 consoles of all time (NO PS3)

it's nice to see consoles from all the major manufacturers in the list :)

guess it just goes to show they all did something right at some point
 
Tough to pick a top 3 to be honest as for me there are 4 that could be there;
Playstation 2
Nintendo 64
Dreamcast
Xbox360.

I would probably go for Dreamcast as that's the most fun I think I've ever had playing games.
 
It's so subjective though. I know what my favourite three would be (PS1, 360 and grrr can't decide between SNES, N64 or Megadrive :/) but no way could I suggest they were the best for everyone, just what I enjoyed most at the time.
 
Although I agree that the majority of the consoles in there have a place in the top 10 (not all) I think the order is well messed up - and the 360 as number 1 !!! That's smacks as pure laziness to bother doing any research on public opinion. Sounds like 1 guys list of favourites to me, a pretty garbage article IMO, as humble as it may be.

360 as number 1 lol.. i think not. And where are the mega drive? dont tell me that dont deserve to be in the top ten of greatest consoles.

It's number 9, the megadrive was known as the genesis in the USA (and Japan iirc)

And of course it's going to be an opinion piece by one person, it's not exactly something you can rate scientifically :p At best, it'd be a public survey of a few thousand people's opinion which will be decided mostly by what they grew up playing or what they're enjoying most right this second.

Madness. Surely the only viable choices for best console ever are the SNES or one of the first two Playstations? Just going by sheer volume of sales.
 
If any handheld should be in there it should be the original Gameboy, because of it's own success and the raft of successful Nintendo handhelds it spawned.

Not sure about the 360 being number 1 either, I would probably have it in my Top 3 but with the original PS and Dreamcast ahead of it.

where were you when sega needed you?

The dreamcast died so quickly because nobody bought the things, so where is all this nostalgia coming from?

I'm being picking but it was known as the Sega MegaDrive in Japan and Asia. The Genesis name is to do with not having legal right to use in the US.
 
How can the 360 be in first place when quite frankly the hardware is very substandard, sure the games catalogue is amazing, but this is about the console itself no?

Proper gamers got it straight away, it was the social gamers wanting DVD playback and media support that waited. (Sounds kinda familiar doesn't it :p). The Dreamcast was purely about games and was the last console to be like that, all other consoles have something else now alongside the gaming.

As for where I was. I had one on import and one on launch day here with 4 games, Arcade stick, VMU and extra pad. Best launch day ever, even better than when I got my Playstation 3, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, DS Lite or Xbox360 (yes, I'm a sod for getting launch day stuff).
