Gamers Nexus needs your help investigating Gigabyte's PSUs.

If you have a Gigabyte GP-P850GM or GP-P750GM power supply, please email us at team [at] gamersnexus dot net. We are investigating PSU failures. We're particularly interested in units that exhibited smoke / fire smell or failed catastrophically (e.g. melted cables). We purchased some recently and are trying to troubleshoot some differences in the safe vs questionable units that have been sold lately.

It seems Techpowerup's woes may be more widely spread.

Time to talk about the negatives, of which there are quite many, which you will have probably already noticed by looking at our list of cons. For starters, my sample died during the over power evaluation, which is a great shame. The primary switching FETs blew up with a hell of a bang. The thing literally exploded, and thankfully, I had it inside a sturdy wooden box or it might have damaged something else in my lab.

Who is the OEM?

MEIC from the looks of it.

Some of the caps used are from an unknown, others from low end manufacturers.

Looks like a lot of cost cutting from the teardown, the internals are clean but those heatsinks are the smallest I think I've ever seen in a PSU.

Doesn’t look good man. Just read a few pages of the tech power up review. I Guess will be avoiding that manufacturer and that particular product line.

Cant help to think what else the Gigabyte PSU which had passed the test and received good reviewed been baited and switched.

Seems to be exaggerating the power of a chip exploding inside a psu.

Unless he'd opened the psu case and was running the components exposed. Then I guess some chip shrapnel could fly about like a tiny handful of gravel.

But enclosed in the metal PSU box... nah.

it would still be a pretty loud bang tbh. it is not a sealed metal box. i have juiced too much on MOSFETs at my uni days, some cook, others do end up with a big bang...

the caps going off is the worst. really loud and crap everywhere.

I have just been informed of this.. Weird thing is that we have used easily over 100 units of the 750w Gold PSUs over the last year and they have been solid. I dont actually think we have had a single issue or RMA with them.

Edit: Admittedly though we are using them on systems as a free upgrade for systems specced with 550w so they are probably not getting anywhere near as stressed or close to capacity.

Wonder if there's a possibility of the ones failing being counterfeit, not sure if there is such a thing as a counterfeit PSUs? But with the mining craze and the demand for components, wouldn't put it past someone to be selling counterfeit components?

Chinese have faked whole companies.
So that can't be excluded.
Though getting those sold in western world might be harder with distributors no doubt using their established connections with Gigabyte.
