Games crash under DX10

I upgraded from XP to 7 last friday. Since then, I've had problems running games, but only today I've realised it only happens using DX10.

What happens is within a minute of a game starting (not in menus) my 4870 will lock up and the screen will go black and lose signal. Windows manages to recover the driver giving me time to end the game or try and carry on which then results in the same, eventually requiring a hard reset.

This happens in company of heroes, but not in L4D so I thought it might be related to directx since both games were ok in XP. Now I've just tested Resident Evil 5. In DX9 mode I can play fine but in DX10 mode it crashes instantly.

I've tried catalysts from 9.7 to 9.11 beta and its still the same. The card is definitely not overheating, as gpuz shows normal temps and l4d and res5 dx9 can be played for ages without any crashing.

Any ideas people?:(

Company of Heroes, Gears of War, RE5, L4D, TF2, CSS, Dawn of War.

All the DX10 ones crash my computer.

RE5 crashed with me in DX10, driver stopped responding and was recovered, thought it was drivers but it was my memory OC, knocked it back 50Mhz and all is fine.

Well, I'm not sure what else to do. I've tried everything obvious. Card is running at stock.

Just testing furmark now with xtreme burning mode @ 1920x1200 and its running it completely fine. How can an intensive stress test run fine for several minutes, but DX10 games crash instantly? Must be software and not hardware surely?

Graphics card is at stock and my e8500 is at 4ghz. Restoring it to stock did not make a difference.

I have reinstalled Directx 9 and 10 to see if that might help, but it did not.

I had that when i was running Win7 RC. I installed Fallout 3 to test it, and it died back to desktop within 2 minutes of 'play' starting from new game. Those of you that know the game will know that 2 minutes in, you've done about nothing but create half of a character.

I haven't tried it to be honest in this install... Only games i've tried are L4D and SW:KOTOR. Got a friend who has installed win7 and played Fallout 3, and its worked fine... Pretty sure he's running in DX10 mode. I'll be giving it a go tonight, because you've piqued my curiosity!

I've had a bit of luck, although I'm still testing.

Managed to get the dx10 games running more stably by firstly increasing the TDR delay to 10s and also underclocking my gpu. :/

Company of heroes for example got past where it usually crashed, but it still felt like it wanted to crash as it kept skipping and pausing for a couple of seconds.

At least I'll be able to play the l4d2 demo tonight!

I'm having the exact same problem and I can't seem to find anyone else online who's having this issue.

I have a 5870 that worked fine in Vista 64 but after I installed Windows 7 64 all DX10 games freeze within the first few seconds and atikmdag recovers from an error. If I run the games in DX9 there are no problems.

I am currently corresponding with AMD and Sapphire tech support with no luck.

Specs-
CPU: Core i7 965
MB: ASUS P6T Deluxe 1701
Soundcard: Soundblaser X-Fi ExtremeMusic
PSU: PC Power & Cooling 750W
GPU: Sapphire 5870 1GB

Ahhh, mine has gone back to its old tricks!

Seriously considering a 5850 now, but I'd rather not spend the money and fix my card.

I have the same problem with vista64 & a 4870 in directx 10 mode :(

Games like flight simulator x & crysis, crash with the atikmdag error.
After a lot of searching I see people have the same issue with nvidia cards as well with the nvlddmkm error.

I ran furmark & memtest, with no problems, my tempratures are fine also.
Tried everything at stock speeds, even underclocked my 4870 slightly, still no luck.

Tried all different ati drivers (with & without catalyst control centre).

No problems at all playing these games in dx9 though.

I just installed company of heroes yesterday. I've ran into the same thing and did a quick look on the net. Saw people suggesting lowering graphics quality. then sound. then blaming bit defender. then catalyst drivers. so I've got catalyst 9.10 (I think) now. That made no difference. running with -nosound made no difference. Lowering graphics quality/effects made no difference.

Finally, I saw something about dx10. I turned dx10 off, and everything is fine.

Were these games previously installed on a 2nd hard drive? Have you tried reinstalling them with Windows 7?
I am concerned because my copy of Windows 7 comes tommorow and my current XP setup is totally crash free and stable.
