Games crashing on startup, more than one

So basically for some unknown reason the past few days, games like CSGO, ARMA 2 and starcraft 2 are just crashing on startup. With CSGO I open it through steam and it prepares to launch, then crashes on the first launch screen, the cursor stays in the middle of the screen and just freezes, cant alt tab or task manager. Also skype has the same problem, crashes on startup and locks my pc up.

EDIT: No games are working now, even the older games are dropping in frames and/or turning into slideshows but I have;

Just re-installed windows, still the same exact problem
Have done a memory test, no problems
Have put my old GFX card in, the exact same problem
Swapped my gfx card around and tried both slots on the motherboard
Test temp with afterburner and my proper gfx card seems fine, no higher than 60c

could it be my HDD is screwed?

what else could it be?

My friend recently had something similar and it was down to the audio sampling rate that was set in Windows.

He changed the audio quality from 24 bit 192k Hz to 24 bit 48k Hz

sound was at 48khz and still happens, also have tested my gpu temp and underclocked it , still happening..

it runs games like quake live and league of legends still, just not 'newer' games it seems :/

Latest DirectX drivers?

Rollback to the last gfx driver, not the latest?

Check the Steam file integrity of the games that crash?

Try running any games that have a 'safe mode', see if the game starts.

Im guessing your on Windows 7?, try running windows update?

Disconnect any USB devices you have plugged in and try running the game?

Im just stabbing in the dark here but I suppose anything is worth trying.

Tried all those neoglow and still nothing, scanned for viruses and found nothing also, as well as used combo fix, and still the same problem.. ;/

Have now tried reinstallling directx11 and still no luck,

I cant reinstall windows at the moment but is there a possibility that its my gfx cards thats nackered? its only 1 year old and it still plays games fine like LoL and the counterstrike source, doesnt make sense but could it be a possibility? It crashes on startup of the game as well, not after or while playing it so i'm thinking not?

It might help if you post your system specs.

I would try a fresh clean windows instalation on a new partition just to rule out any software errors.

I had this with Tribes Ascend after installing Dishonored in Steam.

May be completely unrelated to your problem, but for me I pinned it down to PhysX drivers.

The ones included with Dishonored clash with some games. I installed the latest PhysX drivers from the Nvidia website and it fixed it. Might be worth a try?

My card is an ATI 6870 and I never realised Physix drivers affect all cards. Lesson learned! :)

Cheers

Are you using d3doverrider? Try disabling it if so.

Good point, also try disabling any recording software you may have running or running in the background like Fraps or MSI afterburner etc.

Very strange how it has just started doing it to games that worked fine before.

Try and think of 'anything' newly installed, updated or deleted etc in recent times and retrace your steps maybe.

Lastly, Im not assuming you are but are you playing legit games or pirated ones? If you have pirated games and have a real-time protecting anti virus software like Microsoft Security Essentials, it automatically quarantines 'suspicous' files, namely .dll files that are required in the installation directory for a pirated game to run. If it quarantines a file, it disappears from the directory and may stop the game from running.

My sons PC does a very similar thing and as done for months. We've tried reinstalling windows 7 and even swapped out every component in his PC accept for video card. He could play games for hours without crashing but sometimes it will crash after 5 mins, like yours it's totally random but unlike yours all his games do start. Going to try swapping out his video card at some point but it's puzzling for sure!

I5 2500k 3.3ghz
gtx 560 OC edition
gigabyte z68a-d3-b3 mobo
gskill 8gb
650w psu
windows 7 ultimate but happened on home premium as well
120hz samsung 2233 sycnmaster monitor

I am getting no error messages, no blue screens, it simply wont open the games, including skype. It does however open one or two games and they run but very badly, like they are a slideshow, even with 100-200 fps, and i have a 120hz monitor.

I have tried using my old GFX card and the exact same crash happens, it simply locks my pc and freezes and i have to restart it from the power button, also tried re plugging my gfx card into the other slot on the mobo.

edit: Ok it runs counterstrike source ( the older version) however i used to be getting 700-900 fps on this and now i am only getting 150-250 and it feels choppy, I have monitored gfx temps and they havent gone above 54c, CPU also has not gone above 48 degrees

Assuming you have 2 x 4gb sticks of ram, pull one out and test by running a game that hasnt been working, then put the other in on its own and test that.

Despite you testing the ram it is still worth trying the above.

had different issues to you, ran memtest for 36 hours and all fine and passed but issues persisted, pulled a stick out and boom problems solved. So always worth physically removing a stick and trying them one by one.
