I bought my brother a new motherboard and 4gb ram and gave him the Celeron G530 that I bought when I switched to intel but couldn't afford the i5 3570k at the same time as my motherboard and ram. This was just to get him started, it's a Z68 motherboard and he will be getting a new processor (probably an i5 2500k) and a graphics card when he can afford it.

The main reason for the upgrade wasn't for gaming, he needed something that could run some graphics programs, which it does nicely, but he does want to play games, he knows he won't be able to run anything new but is looking for something to tide him over until he can upgrade the processor and add a graphics card.

Would it be ok with GTA:SA? I bought it for him in a sale on GMG so I'm hoping it will run!

What about FPS? I offered him Quake 2 but he said he doesn't like the quake games, is there anything from the Battlefield or COD series that he could play? He used to play them on the xbox 360 when he had one.

i tried san andreas on mine recently and it's a no go. even at 1024x768 it runs like **** (and looks appalling). :p

the CPU itself is fine for older games so getting a dedicated GPU will be a huge boost.

i've got call of duty 2 which i could test.

I may have gotten his hopes up prematurely with San Andreas then, oops!

If you could try call of duty 2 that would be great, thanks.

It's going to be a good while before he can upgrade anything, would something like a HD 6450 1GB be of any use as an upgrade? I'm sure I could stretch to buying him something in that price range!

Second hand 460 will leave him playing most things at enjoyable setting! Haven't got access to members market but I hear whispers of £40 every now and then :-)

call of duty 2 runs pretty well. i played it for awhile after i posted last night - i forgot how damned good it is. :D

1080p was a bit much to ask but it's ok on 1280x720 and still looks pretty good. yes there are jaggies but what do you expect. :p

and as above, definitely look at getting a used card. it's what i'm planning to do in a few weeks. :)

I'm planning on ordering a couple of bits from here in the next few days hopefully so was thinking of getting him one while I'm at it, I don't have MM access, and won't have for quite some time!

I saw him last night and he said he's played GTA:SA, he said it played ok but looked like ****, I have no idea what settings/resolution he's using but he seems happy enough with it.

He doesn't want a graphics card yet, said he'll only play what he can play at the minute until he can afford his own upgrades!

I told him he can play COD2 as well so he's going to look for a good deal on that!

Quake Live should limp along with the fancy stuff turned down, if you like having your ass handed to you :p

Another which is free is Battlefield Play4Free. Pretty minimal requirements, though I'm not sure if the Intel iGPU is up to it

e:

Here's it running on a lower power laptop chip, so should be ok

I played some games like portal, CoD WaW on lowest settings would be good on 800x600 or 1024x768
EDIT: And I played BF3 on lowest settings 640x360 or something like that :D

glad you posted that. it didn't even occur to me to try it. i know it's basic looking but i still thought it would be too new to worth even attempting with a celeron onboard. but i just did and it runs surprisingly well @ 720p.

Also, League of Legends works well too. If he likes it that is :D
Battlefield 1942 (free on Origin, I think because thats how I got it) worked great for me.
Also, pretty much any source engine game, like TF2, Counter Strike, L4D etc..
