games for crappy hardware

I have a couple of laptops running that spec (Lenovo X230s) and they can play all Source engine games, and many more modern games without any issues, just not on high settings.

Have a look on GOG as well, most games on there should run fine.

It feels really weird playing with mouse and keyboard after so many years with a controller. I'm not sure I like it. :p My wrist seems to be in an unnatural position, probably need a rest.

So it can play Portal but not at a locked 60fps with the (*) recommended settings. So this got me wondering.

Has anyone out there made a website for PC gamers that tells you what settings you can reduce, once at a time to get a better framerate. (Ideally on a per basis.) So, for example, you look up your game, max everything out and then gradually reduce something like anti-aliasing or shadow quality until you get the framerate you want. Or do folks just pretty much get on with it themselves? It's been 12 years since I gamed on PC so I'm not sure what to alter!

Whilst not exactly what you might be after, I always found http://www.tweakguides.com/Games.html pretty handy for some games. Gives you a decent explanation of each option and the level of impact they have.

There's not that many games on there, but some are quite popular and ones that you may come to play.
