Games in Space.

Nexus, Freelancer, Freespace.

I found X3 buggy as hell, with bad framerate pretty much all the time, changing the settings didn't decrease or increase my framerate at all

Bah can't get it working in Windows7, just flickers like crazy or just sits at a black screen, probably an issue with the OGL ATI drivers.

Tsk tsk.. If you will use a beta OS ;p

uvmain had some OGL game issues in Win7 and forcing windowed mode often fixed them. Might be worth a try.

Aye I tried everything, the new .10 MVP's don't support DX anymore, or is it the other way round? Also windowed mode didn't work either sadly.

I'll reinstall X3 I think :p

I think a lot of the performance issues were fixed with new patches. It runs fine on my system with max settings.

I personally love X3 but it does have a very steep learning curve.

Ah ok, I havn't tried it for a while because I got sick of the bugs, and 'very steep' doesn't do the learning curve any justice :p

The link below will tell you all you need and walk you through the installation. The only unfortunate thing is that the retail files are no longer freely available but are now on gog.com. You will need to get them first and then follow the steps in the link. Don't be put off though...it's not as complicated as it first looks and is well worth it.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a go once I get my bandwidth back

I-war (the original, although you might have trouble getting it working with modern OSes).

The story and combat are incredible although it takes some practice (the accurate implementation of physics will confuse you at first).

If it's action only you want, give 'Bang! Gunship Elite' a try.
You also get a good giggle there with the in-game voices.
In a way I suppose there's also the remake of Sinistar, called 'Sinistar unleashed', if I remember rightly.

So, i've been watching Battlestar Galactica recently and have the need to play some space related games, the only ones i can think of are X2 and Eve, are there any others which are simply space combat orientated?

Could try sins of a solar empire. The capital ships on that are kinda like BSG with fighters and stuff coming out them :p

none of these games allow you to land on planets like elite did...i think im gonna just hope and wait for elite 4:)

Ah, if you want some variety in the missions including planets, space, structures and blasting the whole time, try to find a copy of Inferno by the same people who made Epic (the forerunner) and TFX 2000, DID software, if I remember rightly.

You can get them to run in DOSBox 7, as far as I know.

I wish someone would do a remake of this, a true classic, even if little-known.
