Hi all

Writing on behalf of my brother who is experiencing constant jerkiness in all his games, but specifically World at War in recent times. This has been the case for as long as I can remember since picking up a pre built system through OCUK (absolutely no dig intended). He plays on a 20 inch monitor capable of 1680 x 1080 but is trying to run COD at 1280 x 1024. Whens testing with fraps, frame rates are well above 25.

His spec is reasonably decent and scores 5.6 on the Vista performance thingy. Hardware includes:

C2D stock at 2.4
4 gig of ram pc6400 (accepted only 3 gig recognised due to OS)
8800 GTS (the later version of the 2)

I've tried fiddling with the paging file - not that I really know what I'm doing! As I've heard this can make a difference and indeed, has made a difference for another mate who had simialr issues on a much higher spec build with 64 bit OS.

Any ideas on how this could be remedied?

Cheers in advance ;)

jerkiness as in the game freezes/pauses ?
or the screen judders
maybe characters dont move smoothly.

explain better

also whilst ur there....try different video drivers ...also try enabling v/sync or disabling it

Kill every background program/process you can. I had a similar problem that tuned out to be a Dockbar program that interfered with DirectX.

If that doesn't help, update all the drivers (sound, video, etc)

If it still doesn't work, a completely fresh install of windows will.

Thanks for the input thus far guys. To address amnesia's comments, the game play is juddery - no freezing or pauses, just not smooth. It's almost like playing with fps running below 25 but he is comfortably above that.

This does relate to online gaming so maybe connectivity is an issue but the machine also had the same characteristics when he lived at a different address. Wouldn't rule this out though.

Will look at installing new GFX and sound drivers and also shutting down any unwanted background stuff. Re-install is not an option for him as he doesn't want to lose his World at War ranking :D

Anybody had any joy with adjusting the page file parameters?

Cheers guys

you need to keep an eye on his fps and see how low they go....if he is playing online with lots of other players then thats going to put a lot of work on the cpu.
btw a little above 25 would be pretty crap to play a fps game online with from my experience.
i havent played waw online apart from about 5 mins...but i think you should be aiming to hit a constant 125fps and that is capped.

knock the detail level right down and see if it runs any better....also see if the game has any software to check your internet connection whilst playing...if not then just keep tabbing or whatever key it is to keep an eye on your ping.....about 50 is usually average for fps games online.

also dont forget to try different drivers....newer aren't always better...some will offer higher frame rates and others could give lower framerates but smoother motion.

i take it ur using a tft ...play at the highest refresh rate possible...atleast 75.

dont forget like others have mentioned....turn off all background rubbish which u dont use....like antivirus software....program quickstarters....software updaters.....

My main question is why the heck is he running a fairly new game at non native resolution.
You may find the scaler in the monitor is not great at that res, so even though the FPS is high, the motion is jerky.
Try running it at native and see what happens.
