Are Gothic 3 or 4 as good Risen? Got fed up of Mass Effect 2 so im moving on. I bought Risen the same time as Mess Effunct 2 and couldnt put it down. Giving Two World 2 a miss since its not getting great feed back from players.

Anything else out there? Other than the obviously games like Oblivion, Dragon Age, the Witcher etc... Since ive played them.

Gothic 3 with the latest Ultimate Community Patch is to Risen as a finely tuned Lamborghini is to my wife's battered Renault Clio.

What I've heard about Gothic 4 isn't promising, but 3 (once you fix it with the UCP) is just pure open-world RPG lushness.

I quite liked Gothic 4 except I made a character building error and can't finish it.

Divinity 2 is also very good, a lot of extra features to mess with. The original 30 fps limit has been removed and there's now a slider to set the fps limit. This makes a huge difference if like me you are susceptible to migraines.

Get the Dragon Knight Saga as it includes an updated Ego Draconis, so 2 games in one.

Andi.

PS Just to add I loved Risen and can't wait for Risen 2.

Ahh... forget all of that... grab Gothic 3, download and install latest UCP, lose yourself in the open-ended world for a couple of months. Thank me when you can drag yourself away long enough to log in to the forum...

:)

Can't remember all the things it changes, but it does change some aspects of combat, yeah.

It changes levelling, LPs, fixes all the bugs, and it changed the combat dynamics in various ways (can't remember all of them) so that the silly stunlock issues were less prevalent and multiple enemies would actually attack you at once instead of standing around waiting their turn. Some other changes too. Magic actually becomes really cool as well.

I much preferred combat in Gothic 3 with the UCP to that in Risen, actually. Felt more fluid. Although I went the water mage route and pretty much ended up freeze pew-pewing everything after a while. Magic is much, much better in patched G3 compared to Risen.

Edit: and overall, G3 is so, so much deeper than Risen in all manner of ways. Scratch at the surface and there are so many options to pursue that change the game. It's fantastic.

Is it easy to add the community patch to Steam gothic 3?

Just found a thread in Steam that says its already got the community patch 1.60.

Yeah, simple as. Just download (I think latest version is 1.74 or something like that), extract and click. There are a lot of options you can juggle with once it's installed.

You can turn combat modifications on or off, for instance (I recommend on), choose whether to make the game more challenging by revamping the levelling and learning points system, some graphical effect, etc. There are pop-up tooltips for them, though, so it should give you a fair idea once you get to the game menu.

I'm actually a bit jealous! I'd love to be able to play patched Gothic 3 for the first rime again. It's really only rivalled by Morrowind for me in the genre of swords-and-sorcery RPGs.

Edit: Missed you edit about Steam. I don't know about patching the Steam version, tbh. I think most of the fixes were in place by 1.6, but there were a fair few extra fixes and options (including some more combat modifications) in 1.7. Would be worth trying to see if you can patch the Steam version to 1.74 or at least 1.7 if you can find out how.
