Hi all,

Having been bored with FPSs I decided to try something new and went for The Witcher. I'd never played a RPG before but in spite of my initial scepticism this game is fantastic - I thought £35 was expensive [OK I could have got is somewhere cheaper than HMV] but you certainly get your moneysworth. This game is LONG. Normally I complete games within about 12-15 hours but this has taken me days and days - and I'm not even halfway through.

So.. the question is... what should I get next along similar lines? I have no idea.

Oops wrong board. Can a mod please move...

Oblivion is very good and is a similiar kind of game. Those games you mentioned are nothing like the Witcher

Yes, I was really looking for something with the elven/medieval feel to it. I'm not really a fan of Star Wars.

Re Oblivion - isn't it Pt IV of something or other? Do I have to play the other games in the series? Or did I make that up?

Oblivion is like Marmite, you either love it or you hate it.

I personally hate it, the world is too big. The combat system fails in my book and combat seems bugged, and doesnt entise me to play it more, I recommended KOTOR because they are equally as good to play as the Witcher and last ages. Dont know why but Oblivion is one of the worst games i have ever played.

where as i love it :)

i can see WHY people might not like it, which is fair enough, but for what you can pick it up for now, it wouldnt hurt to try it, just get the patch and a few decent mods and im sur ethings can be altered to a way you prefer :)

Just picked up Morrowind and all expansions, great so far, a lot more in depth and challenging compared to Oblivion, you're only given bits of text and rough directions.

One complaint that I do have is that you're only told how to move and hit things, no tutorials on stealth, stealing, marksmanship, persuasion, etc.

I loved Oblivion, great voice acting, excellent melee system, huge amount of.....everything. Played it through three times, just wish it went on for longer, 50 hours isn't enough for £20 dammit. :D

You don't need to play any of the previous elder scrolls, to answer your question.

You might like Baldurs Gate 1&2, Icewind Dale 1&2, Neverwinter 1&2 and possibly Fallout 1&2, if you can value greatness over graphics, although mechanics have improved greatly so you might get annoyed because we've been spoilt in recent years.

i disagree, in terms of game play style witcher feels far closer to KOTOR than oblivion.

Oblivion is just a bloody FPS/slash fest with a few RPG bits thrown in, watered it down big time to sell it for console fanboys - morrowind was far better as an 'RPG' game.

oblivion as said, is marmite. i stacked up sooooo many hours, once you start getting into it and remember the fact you dont have to do the main story straight away its great and also doing the story later on makes the game much better. mixed up with all the mods out for it you simply cant turn it down. also, some of the landscapes are gorgeous.

my single and only nic at it is that there are only a set amount of armor types. i much prefer custom armor and wep type games.

There are a few good options here. For a more story-driven traditonal style rpg like The Witcher with some freedom you are looking at Kotor 1+2, Baldur's Gate Series, Planscape: Torment. They are a bit dated now but if latest graphics isn't an issue for you then they are some of the best rpgs out there. More recently though, NWN 2 + Mask of the Betrayer expansion is a good option too.

Oblivion is a totally different animal to all those games, really a sandbox action/adventure game....so not a good option if you want more of The Witcher. And as someone earlier said, it feels like a cheap console conversion, even though it was supposed to be developed equally on both the PC & console's own strengths. Mods help it a fair bit, but all the hassle involved just wasn't worth it in the end for me. Ultimately a big dissapointment.....I like the marmite analogy :)

Oh, forgot to mention the Gothic series is a good option also, maybe a better one if you don't want companion/party mechanics and want a more gritty feel like The Witcher has. Its hard to get hold of Gothic 1+2 now but 3 is readily available. 3 had a bad rep at release as it was a bugfest but community patches have fixed a ton of stuff lately. 3 does slant a little bit more to the Oblivion sandbox style thing though.

Gothic 2 is about the closest thing to the Witcher in terms of gameplay, choosing factions etc. Don't go near Gothic 3, unless someone can confirm that it's been patched to a playable state.

I found The Witcher to be close to KOTOR in terms of gameplay, mechanics. Also they both have great storylines.

Oblivion is much more open than the Witcher and you can pretty much go anywhere and do what you want when you want to do it (within certain bounds). As stated above it has (1) a similar medieval / dungeons / knights of old setting to the Witcher and (2) a huge game world.

I enjoyed both KOTOR and Oblivion and think that both are fine games...I'd recommend that you eventually get around to playing both. Start with Oblivion of you've got a lot of time on your hands (like you're on holiday or something for the next 2-3 weeks!) and fancy really getting stuck into something big. KOTOR if you've got less gaming time.

Despite getting good review scores I was massively disappointed with KOTOR2. Fine if you loved KOTOR and need more of the same...as long as you are prepared to accept the incomplete / fragmented storyline. I'm sure that others will have different views.

Thanks for the replies - do you have to have the other Elder Scrolls games to understand Oblivion?

What about Neverwinter Nights/Morrowmind?

What about Neverwinter Nights/Morrowmind?

After having played The Witcher, you'll find NWN2 severely disappointing. It's just got a very cliched storyline and even more cliched characters. Within the first half hour you find out that you're a mysterious orphan, and have teamed up with a dwarf that loves to brawl and a whiney female thief with a horrible american accent.

After some of the storylines in the Witcher, it'll just make you want to vomit :p

So the next choice looks to be Oblivion.

Taking into account what others have said, The Witcher almost seems to be ahead of the game as far as other RPGs go.
