Games like The Witcher?

Oblivion is like Marmite, you either love it or you hate it.

I personally hate it, the world is too big. The combat system fails in my book and combat seems bugged, and doesnt entise me to play it more, I recommended KOTOR because they are equally as good to play as the Witcher and last ages. Dont know why but Oblivion is one of the worst games i have ever played.

i find the combat in KOTOR lacking and parts of the game are very linier it does have a great storyline but it was the only bit about it that kept me playing.
i loved oblivion, the combat at times was a little buggy but u feel like your i the thick of it also it has a pretty good storyline/s and nice graphics.
I'm loveing the witcher i think it is the best of both worlds and the best RPG for a longtime

Gothic 2 is about the closest thing to the Witcher in terms of gameplay, choosing factions etc. Don't go near Gothic 3, unless someone can confirm that it's been patched to a playable state.

The community have done a great job at patching Gothic 3 up to a decent standard.... Performance has increased and most crashes / memory leaks fixed as well as the large amount of scripting bugs... That said the combat is still pretty simplistic (rubbish) and it is far from perfect but compared to how it played on release it is a much better game.

It can be picked up for £10 online these days which is a very good price as there is plenty of gameplay in there.... Also within the next month a joint community/developer patch is going to be released to make things even better.

i have it, but even though it was patched to the latest patch, and also the latest community patch, it still crashed 10 minutes in. That was on vista 32, now im on vista 64 with 4gb of ram and actually overclocked etc, should i give it another go?

Problem with Oblivion is you NEED to visit 3rd party fan sites to get the best out of the game. They offer some really superb addons with none fps drop (or hardly any) but increase the graphics of the game by quite a chunk. So if you do play that, I'd recommend getting some of the addons, such as the higher quality ground texture addons and better grass packs.

It can't do any harm if you already own a copy of the game... You might want to check the community forums for Vista related fixes etc.

Graphics wise it's a little dated, but the Fallout series is worth looking into.

3 games and you can pick it up for less then a tenner.

I found The Witcher to be close to KOTOR in terms of gameplay, mechanics. Also they both have great storylines.

Oblivion is much more open than the Witcher and you can pretty much go anywhere and do what you want when you want to do it (within certain bounds). As stated above it has (1) a similar medieval / dungeons / knights of old setting to the Witcher and (2) a huge game world.

I enjoyed both KOTOR and Oblivion and think that both are fine games...I'd recommend that you eventually get around to playing both. Start with Oblivion of you've got a lot of time on your hands (like you're on holiday or something for the next 2-3 weeks!) and fancy really getting stuck into something big. KOTOR if you've got less gaming time.

Despite getting good review scores I was massively disappointed with KOTOR2. Fine if you loved KOTOR and need more of the same...as long as you are prepared to accept the incomplete / fragmented storyline. I'm sure that others will have different views.

you are correct :)

Witcher is like a 1player version of KOTOR except the combat is Real Time (and better) and its a fantasy setting.

The horrible thing about KOTOR2 is that you don't realise just how butchered the story is until the last 10% of the game, when it all suddenly gets wound up really abruptly and leaves loads of questions and story threads unfinished.

I wish team gizka would get their act in gear and finish their fan patch, but I don't think it's ever going to happen now.

Why do you believe the fan patch will never be finished? Is it a long time since the site has been updated?

Well, I suppose they might get it done eventually, but it's been 3 years at this stage. You get a short update every three months or so to let you know they're still at it.

The Witcher is kinda hard to pigeon-hole actually, come to think of it. It lends from a lot of RPG styles/mechanics with its own unique touches as well.

As for Oblivion, screw it. Should have given the short answer earlier -I hate Oblivion but love marmite :p As a freeform action/adventure/pseudo fps game (ala S.T.A.L.K.E.R in a way) its quite good for those that dig that sort of thing but what got me and many annoyed about it is Bethesda's assertion that it's a true rpg, or in their words "The RPG to end all RPGs" and "The ultimate RPG".....yeah whatever, lol.

I guess studios like Black Isle, BioWare, etc had it wrong all along? Even earlier Bethesda games...I wanted to believe the BS but had a rude awakening when I played it. Well, apart from the Dark Brotherhood questline, which was well done.

So now we've got a whole new generation of gamers that are convinced Oblivion is where its at for RPGs. And due to its commercial success (console version hepled big time here) that sends out an ominous message to other developers that this style is the way to go for RPGs. Thank goodnes CD Projekt (The Witcher's developers) didn't listen and had their own ideas on what constitutes a deep PC RPG....well, I'm grateful to them at least.

/end rant

Maybe the best option of all is to wait and hope for a Witcher sequel?

:D
