Jade Empire

This is another one that Bioware bugged the hell out of me with - all the characters sounded like whiney american teenagers. In a fantasy-asian setting this just blew it for me.

Other than that, excellent game, but the voice acting made me want to drown kittens.

So for me it comes down to

Oblivion
Neverwinter Nights [1 or 2? Are they related]
And something from Baldhurs Gate since I've heard good things about it, though I'm not sure which one to go for.

To be honest Witcher could have been a great game, but the combat is rubbish, the graphics are sub standard and the interface is pants. Only thing going for it is the story. Oh and its nothing like KOTOR at all.

Neverwinter nights 1 and 2 are ok but extremely dated now, even with recent expansions, I couldnt be bothered playing the latest one as I remembered how bad the interface was. Same with Baldurs gate, pretty good, but very dated.

Avoid NWN2. It came free with my new 8800GTS 512MB so I though I'd stick it in and have a go. I ended up uninstalling it after about 10 mins. It is just... crap! The interface makes it harder to play than it really is, the story is generic and not told very well, the cut scenes are boring and bland... should I go on? Oh, and it runs like a dog even with its dated graphics, it gives stupid pointless error messages in Vista before it starts up and it doesn't support OpenAL and ALchemy makes it crash... ok I'll stop! :p

How do i defeat the frightener in the witcher? I put the bell on and made the couldron make the loud noise, but my attacks dont seem to be doing any damage?

Choose a different option? :D I went down to the lab with Triss. Only because I wanted to curry favour with her and get all squelchy later.

Its not often I disagree with everything in a paragraph!

Each to their own eh

For what ive played so far, it seems a good game, the graphics arnt great though (and thats running maxed out at 1680x1050) with 2xaa.

Well there not bad, just not groundbreaking or anything, plus cutscenes look weird.

I've managed to log 140 hours on X-Box 360 Oblivion, never want to go back, but really enjoyed it, should have good graphics on a half decent rig and some of the views are breathtaking, storyline is very enjoyable and the side-quests are fun and varied. Get the PC version and there are so many mods and addons available, I tried it later and got it on the cheap for my 360 but should be better with the 3rd party addons.

However, I don't want to go back for another play thorough 140 hours is all I can stomach:) If you do go for it though, for the love of God if you are not planning to install a 3rd party mod that sorts levelling out, please read at least 1 guide that tells you about the levelling system and how to get around it, you'll get more enjoyment out of the game by not finding yourself with skills against flower arranging while your enemies all get progressively tougher and not being able to advance the main quest line when you want (Kvatch at later levels if you level badly due to NPC's dying very quickly).

Failing that my opinion is that you're in a bit of a bad position, i've only just started playing the Witcher myself (about to play more in a minute i'm about half way through ACT1:), and to be honest, after playing Baldurs Gate and Fallout 2 which imho are the best RPG's of yesteryear, as far as 'Modern' RPG's go, and to be honest all the RPGs i've ever played, the Witcher is excellent, you won't find a more 'grown up' set of storylines or attitude to the gamer I don't think, not since Baldur's Gate and Fallout series, which may put you off because i'm talking isometric / very very old graphics here.

If you get into RPGs, storyline storyline storyline, you won't regret choosing some of the golden oldies, as most will be far more enjoyable and satisfying to play than many of the newer games.

Give Oblivion a try, you may hate it but it really is a 'marmite game', Gothic 3 I was quite impressed by, combat system was horrendous causing thousands to be **** scared of wild boars... however I enjoyed the gritty atmosphere and player changes you can cause in the world, I'll be going back to it if I can find a bargain copy.

Anyway enough waffling, back to the Witcher...:)

Sub standard? Ok i'll bite. What is standard? Every comparable game and the most obvious being the NWN2 game is poorer than the witcher in the looks department. OK we're not talking Crysis or COD4 but they're different genres so not fair comparisons.
I found the graphics to be very pretty. The artwork was top notch and the background very well detailed and researched. Certainly the most convincing medieval setting i've seen in a game. Most importantly the graphics do their job which is to create an atmosphere and reinforce the gritty adult feel of the game.

As to the combat: well OK you don't like it. Fine but it's not rubbbish. It's not as good as it could be but I prefer it to the traditional hack and slash of repetitive clicking or the detached click and watch of some RPGs. At least you do have some input and there's a small bit of timing involved.

I don't really have any problems with the interface either. It's at least designed with the PC in mind and the writing isn't so big a sentence fills the screen (Oblivion, i'm looking at you!). I found it capable but not remarkably special but neither was it remarakbly bad in the cut down (streamlined) or broken way so many games are these days.

The most similar games to the Witcher are definitely the original 2 Gothic games. They're a bit buggy and i've not played them recently but I enjoyed them immensely when they first came out and would still consider them to be among my favourite games.
