Freelancer?

I played this game a while back and thought it was amazing, great story line :)

However i don't think i can make myself play it through again, so are there any other games similar?

Thanks

freelancer was great fun, but a very old game now. X3 has SOO much more scope than freelancer, but the arcade shoot-em-up feel isnt as good imo, its more of a 'expand and conquer the galaxy' type game - fantastic in its own right but not really a substitute to freelancer. Cant really think of any good modern releases that give a similar experience to freelancer :S

I had the same urge. Loved Freelancer, started looking for something else. Tried X3, and hated it. The learning curve takes the joy out of the game for me. I've tried twice now, and I've come to the conclusion that I'm too stupid to play X3... just can't get into it.

My 2 cents worth is: X3 is NOT Freelancer in any way, shape or form. A good game for some I have no doubt, but one that is not along the lines of Freelancer!

No chance of a Freelancer sequel then?

I loved that game too, still have it on my shelf in case I get the "urge". :D

Ah. I guess I'm unusual in that I found Freelancer hideously dissapointing. The combat was pretty awful and it was a game that kind of pretended to be open-ended but really just wasn't. Shame, really :/

That said, I couldn't actually get into X3 either - I assumed I was unusual for that too, but obviously not :p

I've still yet to find anything that matches Freespace 2 for space-combat and...hmm... Sim City/Alpha Centauri or something for empire/etc building ;)

Love the idea of Freelancer 2. Bigger Universe, Bigger Ship Selection, same control method... please!

so EVE but with cockpit control of your ship instead of point and click :)

I loved this game, but if i remember rightly, isnt the story left hanging at the end? It doesnt fully wrap itself up does it? (been several years since i played it)

Could never get into Darkstar One, just didn't like the windowsxp type interface.

X series always been too big/ultimately boring for me.

^Mnutz: yeah the problem with freelancer was once you completed the main storyline it was over, nothing to do.

Never tried EVE. Isn't that an on-line jobbie?

yeah it is, although there is a 14 day free trial out there somewhere.

It is what EVE should have been but it hasnt got the 1st person control over the ship, its all point and click.

If you think Freelancer was big then EVE is massive.

Id be very up for a freelancer two game, really loved it.

Well thats what i heard when it came out. Its basically same as freelancer so everyone commented it as the unofficial sequal to freelancer.

Oh!

I thought Palbo was saying he never heard of it being called a unofficial freelancer sequal. Didnt know he didnt know the actual game. ;p

freelancer fans, have you seen Freelancer: Discovery

Discovery is a modification that expands Freelancer universe without spoiling it with unneeded or illogical changes. This mod retains atmosphere and balance of the original game, both multiplayer and singleplayer, and adds new interesting features, allowing players to develop and explore far beyond the limits of unmodded Freelancer. Those features include 97 new pilotable ships, 59 new systems, lots of new weapons, commodities and equipment, battleship encounters, improved artificial intelligence of NPCs and many others - everything seamlessly integrated into Freelancer universe.

Thanks for the posts so far :)

I'll look into the alternative games mentioned, and i'll install freelancer again and try out that mod :)

I'm currently playing Freelancer as it happens. It seems OK, but definitely not in the same class as Freespace 2, which is untouchable as far as space combat goes. My main gripes are:

-Weapon system seems really fiddly - why not have seperate buttons for selecting launching missiles/ecms etc?
-The conversations in bars are far too repetitive, and sometimes stupid things happen like you speak to the barman and he says "welcome back mr trent", yet speak to a patron and they say "First time here, isn't it?". I can see what they were trying to do with the planets, giving them all a distinct style, but I can't help feeling that they would have benefitted from a little more polish.
-Required a lot of hacking to get it looking OK in widescreen and even then it's a bit dodgy
-HUD target icons are a bit hard to see at times... both for targetting and the arrows when enemies are out of your field of view
-Small amount of trade goods available at most stations

I completed Darkstar One earlier this year and it's a pretty decent game, worth checking out - for more views see my replies at the end of this thread: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=8609604

Once I'm done with Freelancer, I'm probably going to check out Starlancer, which is the prequel. Then maybe I-War2 if I can find a copy.
