Games like..

i war 2 is excellent :) better than starlance imo (and freelancer as well tbh). Got tons of atmosphere and feels like a free-formish game. Also mods out for it as well unfortunately its pretty old now... but hey how beautiful can space get? black is black :D
 
Yeah I think Space games don't show their age quite as much as other titles, because the 'environment' doesn't need to be anything special in terms of textures, you've got your black background with a few stars/nebula/planets etc and that's about it, compared to FPS games where you need fancy textures across the whole level.
