Games that reward you for exploring.

I bought Skyrim yesterday, the Legendary Edition with all the DLC, and I can see what you mean. I've spent hours just wandering around rather than doing the quests and there's always something to discover. Even when I was doing the first few quests I found myself getting distracted and going off for a mooch about in some old ruin or deserted mine.

Skyrim is an epic game!

If you like that I suggest you play Fallout 3 GOTY and Fallout New Vegas GOTY.

Shadow Warrior (2013). I've only played the demo so far, but a few interesting hidden bits there.
The GTA games usually have some fun bits tucked away (though I haven't played IV or V)

That game gave me the two biggest surprise delights of any game this year,

1) The suprise/hidden recreation of one of the original levels, complete with low-res surroudings and anime woman.

2) Death Metal Bunny.

Max Payne 2 - Police Station level is basically one big easter egg :)

Serious Sam games usually have some pretty ludicrous stuff too, like you walk round this massive pyramid and fine a detonator switch.... pretty jaw-dropping! Also you spot a little oasis with powerups approximately 923423 miles away in the desert, trek over there, and suddenly more baddies than you find in an entire modern FPS game suddenly spawn :p

Personally I'm not really a fan of games that have lots of high-end loot stashed around the place in 'random' places, as it basically forces you to go exploring leading to lots of wasted journeys. I much prefer things that are somehow clued, or part of a puzzle so you have to use your brain to locate them rather than just sheer persistence.

Not really 'loot' but the ending to the Metro games are influenced by how you play during the game. Exploring areas for supplies, interacting with certain objects and NPC's or listening to their conversations could give you the 'good' ending instead of the normal ending.

Borderlands 2 - I still haven't played most of the games I bought in the Steam Christmas sale because Borderlands 2 is so so good. And the more you explore the better it gets, surely one of the best shoot and loot games so far. Still going strong after 500+ hours.

mass effect 1 - spent hours doing the side quests in the citadel and trying to find all the god damn mother ****ing keepers (had 22/23 for well over 2 hours) due to doing the side quests people popped up in me2 that related back to me1

Dark souls - some decent loot to find if you search

Dishonored - i believe you have to search for some orb things (cant remember what they are called) leads to some interesting characters and the dark orb things either are for an achievement or boost your abilities, or both

WoW - if you explore every part of the map you get a title, which is pretty cool

Skyrim
Borderlands 1 & 2 With all additional DLC
Thief is surprisingly good - don't know if you would class it as a "proper" adventure game
Fallout 3 & New Vegas GOTY versions so you get all DLC
Diablo III is quite good aswell

Since when does Skyrim reward decent loot for exploring? On the contrary, the loot system in Skyrim is as interesting as watching paint dry. Yes there are countless caves/dungeons/ruins to explore but the loot you find in them usually consists of generic items such as glass sword etc.

If you don't mind aging games, Gothic 2 often rewards exploring.

You can also find interesting loot while exploring in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Borderlands 2 has awesome loot but that has nothing to do with exploring - you need to kill (lots of) things to get stuff.
