Come the weekend my new rig will be up and running, (touch wood for no problems)
Once its built and tested stable with the usual benchmarks and apps which games are best to push it.

Going to install ACC and Dirt2.0 first see how they run and if VR is playable.
New plague tale is on gamepass and is meant to be taxing, any other games there?

DCS, MS Flight sim & Star Citizen will be installed but waiting for my new sticks to arrive before setting them up.

Thinking of grabbing a copy of Spiderman to give it a go, and maybe Stray as well cause its on sale, maybe RDR2 if i can find it cheap and play through that again.

What other games would you recommend?

Spiderman isn't really demanding, and I felt the game world was pretty bland tbh or visually stunning. It looks good, but doesn't look "wow next gen" - It also has a CPU usage pike issue in its in-house engine but still runs flawlessly if you have a fairly capable system.

RDR2 is naturally excellent graphically, but I prefer Days Gone over it, and the new Plague Tale is very nice too. All of thes egames run really well and look stunning. You can comfortably max them out at 3440x1440 and get near triple figures on average.

The new Forza is technically impressive and if you have not already, the Doom Eternal has the usual visual upgrades of a modern FPS to look at.

Well Days Gone is under £10 on CDkeys,
Metro Exodus is also dirt cheap,
I did cyberpunk and RDR2 on my Xbox series X and dont really fancy buying them again unless i can get a good deal.
Forza, yeah thats on the list and Gamepass got me covered there.

As for Graphics barely moved in 10 years,

Insert spec savers image.

Make sure Metro is the Enhanced Edition. Don't know what GPU you have but a 3080 Ti runs it at 3440x1440 with everything whacked up nicely.

How does the "Enhanced Edition" work? does it not come with every version of the game? as just another separate install steam isn't very clear on it. I have a 4090 and come Friday something to plug it into.

It's a ground up version built for raytracing etc and you will find it in your library as a standalone game to install. So just install that and whack every setting to max. If you buy Essentially you will have both versions of the game, and can install whichever version you want.

This you?
It's true.... look the difference between most games.... nearly everything is designed for consoles and farcry 3 looks about the same as 6 apart from higher res textures and a few flashy effects....

in my day we had crysis guess you are one of those zoomer folk who doesn't know how good PC gaming once was

:D I think what mr boomer is trying to say is that back then, only a couple of games used the latest engine tech, and because of that were so demanding that nothing could max them out effectively without being a slideshow. There was no raytracing, no HDR, no DSLL, no FSR etc, just pure rasterisation at play and cards that could barely keep up at 1080p let alone 1440p at the time. Plus CPUs were trash compared to what we have today.

Nowadays every game has either HDR or RT or DLSS or all other kinds of GI/SSR/Ao etc. So to that end, yes most games look the same, in that they all have similar tech in tehir engines, just used and showcased differently.

It does actually make me think though, even if there isn't an actual answer to this etc

But what is THE best looking game out there currently...

99% of games are designed to run on a console and don't care about pushing graphics.

we have to wait for another console cycle to see any real uplift

Incorrect. ONly the sky and plane details are great, if you get anywhere close to ground level the detailing is toilet in most locations aside form the handful that have been hand built with higher details - But even then it's a game to enjoy in teh air for the distant views. Doesn't give the visceral immersion of close quarters high impact gaming like say Metro Enhanced, Doom Eternal etc. Games that look considerably superior on PC than on any console.

I know you’ll be installing it eventually but honestly Star Citizen at 4K is beautiful, I was driving around a planet earlier and legit it looks realistic.
