Games you go back to but the visuals disappoint

So I randomly went back to sc2 legacy of the void as I need to finish its campaign.

Visuals won't ever stop me playing a game however am sure this used to be allot nicer than it looks right now for me?

Colours seem washed out, characters up close don't look smooth e.g blotchy in places.

Games in ultra all max etc, I know it's old so maybe I just remember it being better than it actually was.

Its cut scenes still hold up though :)

Any one else ever gone back and thought oh... Its not as pretty as I thought it was?

Final Fantasy 7, had hundreds of hours on it over the end of the 90's, early 00's and remember the visuals to be utterly stunning.

Went back to it last year for a nostalgia play, was shocked how rose tinted my specs were.

Maybe I'm an odd one, but no not really.

320x280 titles that can't be upscaled then maybe. Otherwise I seem to have compartmentalised my expectations between old school and new. New school better be astonishingly high detail at 3440x1440 and getting at or near 100 fps, otherwise I'm irked.

Old school titles I find myself charmed at ancient resolutions and 60 hz. The biggest battle is deciding whether to stretch such titles to UW or not, but otherwise I'm quite happy with their relatively ghastly graphics.

That's one game I will commit to every time I come back to it. Each time I play its probably 50hrs of my life gone and the visuals are just charming to me.

Ha I was the same :D

Still the actual playability of the game is so damn good every time I come back I still manage a full play through.

First baldurs gate as well, didn't expect the graphics to be great but they are a lot ropier than I recalled

A lot of early 3d titles look awful now, for obvious reasons. Some games which seemed miraculous when the PS/Saturn arrived just are horrific now, but it's hardly surprising given the era they ushered in was so transformative. There are a few which I still am astounded by the technical achievements of those early days though, for all their limitations. Given they were launch titles, Ridge Racer and Virtua Fighter are still remarkable in their own way 25 years later. Without them I doubt Nintendo would have felt the need to go all in with Mario64, but they changed peoples expectations so radically that they had to take the chance.

I recently went back to AC Unity. I remember thinking when it came out, how great it looked. It still holds up pretty well, but even on ultra it's not as spectacular as I used to think it was.

Kayne + Lynch 2 ... bought it when it first came out and was Wowed by the graphics and how raw it looked with the shaky camera and the really solid gun play , I loaded it up the other month and thought eh ? Is this the same game haha

Anything beyond graphics 3d acceleration is fair game for me.

Only time I can recall be disappointed was going back to the original Colin mcrea on the PS1. It was never a looker on release, extremely pixelated compared to other racers of the time. My disappointment was probably amplified because the PC release used my Voodoo 2 and didn't look that bad.

Reminds of the awkward transition from 2D to 3D in games. One of the most marked examples of this being a downgrade was between Dungeon Keeper 1 and Dungeon Keeper 2 on the game map.

I certainly know which I find more visually pleasing :p

But in game it was massively improved over the original with a 3D card. For the time the level of detail on the dungeon horde and assets were outstanding. The 2D maps and title screens were low res efforts though:)

I think some of the old console stuff suffers from modern displays. CRT TVs certainly warmed the images up a bit.

I find old 3d stuff the worst. GTA 3 and Vice City don't look great now. Although I find the original Hitman OK, and Thief too.

I find it a bit like watching old black and white films, it's jarring for the first 10 minutes or so, but if the game's a good'un you soon forget. Clunky controls OTOH can ruin things. Having said that, I remembered dragon age: origins looking a lot prettier than it does, maybe it's recent history that trips me up.

Yeah I love re1 and at the time tank controls didn't bother me I do find them jarring to go back to.

Although there clunkiness was intended

I was thinking of the original system shock. Weirdly by the time I played it WASD and mouse look were the standard, so I guess I was just more tolerant 20 years ago. I know the enhanced version sort of fixes it, but still puts me off. That and the atrocious voice acting.

Yeah bad controls are definitely way harder to deal with. I can take a game looking like a dogs dinner but some of the archaic control schemes are just so infuriating that I cannot persevere.

Quest For Glory 4 and Heroes Of Might & Magic 3

I remember the graphics/art being great when I was a teen. Still lovely games though.
