Yup consoles are dead - 76 million PS4's sold, with 19 million of those being sold last year, the 4th year of it's production.
With a further 16 million predicted for the current year. Sales are expected to then slow further before we see the PS5 released.
Yup - those are some definite "platform death" figures.

The market for second hand gaming is slowly drying up as so many are moving towards digital. Its not because everyone is hating on physical software stores, its because eventually games on available for huge discounts on PSN, xlive, Steam, uPlay and Origin. Just the sign of the times, we are all just slowly without even knowing it, being sucked into buying games online, or via digital stores. CD Keys.com is making a tidy living it seems from selling activation keys.
I bet the only ones going to game.co.uk now are mostly parents buying for their kids, unaware the game is cheaper brand new from Tesco or online or in some cases even digital stores online.

I've never paid RRP for a digital game yet (excluding indie). If it's a new release I always buy physical if I have to have it day one. I don't really shop on the high street but I do trade in my finished physical games that I bought day one. All day one physical I'll generally get from Amazon.
I think it depends. When the XBox was going to come out with a system to 'lock' physical copies of games to your account, there was quite a backlash. So much so, that Sony used it to their advantage, saying they would not lock games to accounts on the PS4.
So one reason some consumers like the idea of selling their physical copies later on to recoup some costs rather than having an aging digital collection they might not want to bother with again. Publishers like consoles because of the rampant piracy on PC.
