Gamescom 2013 & Past Experiences (& car ferry)

You'd have thought that the OP would have least indicated where the event is so that people who don't know the eveny but do know the city(?) could comment without having to look the information up themselves.

No he wants to go to Gamescom for what it is, games. Is asking what else there is to do possibly from members who have been before.

You will just argue with anything I say won't you?

Where does he ask what ELSE there is to do? He doesn't, he asks what is there to do. Two very different things.

Don't even know who you are, was just commenting on your arsey comment here.

Well it's quite obvious he is interested in games given his user name and the fact he's interested in going to GAMEScom. Its quite clear he's knows there are games being shown, and just asking what is there to do.

Have you...you know...looked on the gamescom website.

It seems it gives you a pretty good idea of what goes on. And...it even suggests some accommodation options!

If you read my original post you would have seen that I have looked on their website...

Not very well. It informed me about demonstrations of past hardware, cosplay, some awesome looking cars on show. Q and a sessions. Presentations. The map shows the different areas available and how they're tailored to different interests.

You can watch the SC2 WCS Finals there iirc, them being hosted there is the reason all the regional finals are on the same weekend as The Invitational 3 (DotA2 tourney).

I've been to Gamescom twice, 2010 and 2011.

As has been said, it is huge. The exhibition centre is vast but the game stands only take up a few of the halls, easy to access and very well signposted.

Bare in mind that while some stuff is done in English a lot of it is in German or German and then translated. If developers are doing game demos sometimes these will be indicated what language they are going to be. For any giveaways, competitions etc. this was all done in German so if you have some knowledge of the language that would be handy.

It gets very busy over the weekend, I think due to the price of tickets being fairly low people can just come take a long. There were families with babies and pushchairs etc. Not really a good place for that as it is very loud and very warm.

With the entrance ticket you get a travel ticket for the local trams and train service which can get you to the Exhibition Centre from the City Centre or your hotel which is very handy. The city centre itself is quite nice, compact, good restaurants and bars as well as all the normal amenities. I would suggest staying in the city if you can find somewhere decent price so it is easy to do something in the evening.

It is really worth going if you're into gaming, wonder the stands and play some soon-to-be-released games, watch some competition gaming etc. They also had a whole area with computer mods and some hardware manufacturers. There was always activities and things outside as well including all the food and drink stands.

I'll try to answer any other questions if I can.

This has been a pretty great experience so far, amazing the amount of work that goes into it. Been here a week now, first few days were pretty manic doing set up, but now that's done I have quite a bit of free time to check everything out.

Was pretty funny when they let the hordes in yesterday and today, stood and watched as all these people legged it straight on to the PS4 booth next to the office. The queue was ridiculous even after 15 mins, goes all the way around the booth and down the hall!

I am back home now, was pretty manic, lots of chubby kids getting excited, i was in the business section so not quite so manic, but yeah a good experience, never seen a venue that size before.
