Gaming 2500k cpu upgrade? 6700k or 5820k

Been thinking about upgrading my [email protected] to a new cpu lately, I understand it's a big change with new ram board etc.

I do mainly game but I am interested in doing some video rendering and recording my gaming sessions (I play mainly mmorpgs so I want to record the pvp)

Is it worth it? If so which one would you go for? More cores or higher instructions per clock etc?

has anyone considered the effect of directx12 on future performance?

i.e. more cores = better?

i keep thinking investing in a 5820k might be a good idea with its 6 cores vs the 4 cores from a 6700k.

Just moved up from a 2500k to a 5830k and you can notice the increase plus I'll keep this for another 4 years so you want more cores end of the day if your keeping it for a while near the same gaming proformance as the 6700k right now and future dx12,source 2 and more multi core supported games will matter in the coming years will be better with 6 cores.

i was just reading up on DX12 and the potential of cores. making me think about the 5820k more and more. i think the 5830k is a bit out of my price range tho

im at work atm cant remember exactly what the type and speed of the ram is. pretty sure i didnt overclock it tho (the ram that is)

will probably be around £550 for a cpu/cooler/board/ram. starts to add up for sure T_T

both valid points yeah. I think my 2500k is pretty maxed atm, back when i OC'd it I remember tweaking a lot, ram included but it didn't behave very well so put it back to standard. the Motherboard i bought was not exactly high end. A mistake i wont make again cheaping out on the board.

i do spend a lot of time gaming, i set up my 2500k must be at least 2 years ago? overclocked it and then never touched a setting again so its been a while lol.

my mindset was 2500k to say 6600k was a mediocre upgrade but 2500k to 6700k/5820k for example would be a bigger worthwhile upgrade. Maybe im looking at it the wrong way

Memory Type DDR3
Memory Size 8 GBytes

according to CPU-Z

the OCD has the temp 61 degrees or so at full load

memtest came back with 0 errors, i left it over night.

that squad forum thread is very interesting, some of them seem pretty sure about the results.

i realise a i3 may run games but so does my 2500k to a certain extent. if i cant get a decent leap in performance then i probably wont do it.

Look at my post/link above. In some games you will see huge gains.

As someone says in that thread, the 2500k circle jerk needs to stop. Is it competent and can it still play modern games? Yes of course. Will it give you the best experience in all games you play compared to more modern i7's? Absolutely not. There will be some, as shown, where an i7 and especially the latest ones will stomp all over a 2500k

yeah ive been reading that its very interesting. makes a lot of sense.

well thats good, i take it u also tryed in single with this test 20mins per mem test is fine to find problems but i might not find anything wrong as it was lefted overnight under test,

have you tried the other easy one is format ur OS drive and load a fresh copy on ? that 9 times out of 10 fixed random effects from the OS

the next thing is a reformat. i got a new 500g SSD since my 2x120g's could only hold 2 games or so lol.

so conflicted atm lol.

the screenshot i showed with 4 cores high usage is from a MMO that is very intensive with lots of people on the screen.

thats forum thread for squad is making me wonder atm

at the end of the day its up to u what u wanna do pal:D

but with that said if it was me i would look into why i was getting 90% load :confused:with WoW and 3 other very low demand on cpu core, after that if i couldnt find whats holding the cpu down then maybe looking at a cpu and mboard.

also on that note there is a third way looking at 4690k and a low end z97 board, again this setup is quite overkill but still give u the future proof that u are looking for without a spending over 300quid.

hope this helps;)

cheers :D the game is called archeage its based on the cryengine. its very demanding in certain areas.

like atm ingame im running with 124fps. but in crowded areas and mass pvp it does drop fps A LOT, i know some of it is down to the engine but im not sure how much

The gf probably got her eye on it lol.

If I did it tho I'd need a new everything. Cpu mem board cooler psu and case probably. Since she will take the old.

Thanks for all the replies. Gave me something to consider

thanks for all the replies. I have finally decided to go for a 5820k build.

I have the itch and my gf will have my 2500k, my parents will have my gf's old PC. So nothing's going to waste. While it all works out for the better I want to get a decent i7 build ready for a GPU upgrade further down the line.

So... not sure if its better to make a new thread but I've been looking at options.

The main question I have is about a cpu cooler and clearance for the ram modules. I was looking at a bundle from OCUK but I'm not that impressed by the cooler options, I think id prefer a h80i/h100i or a Noctua NH-D15 or D14.

My recent mini itx build i bought a Noctua fan and I was extremely impressed by the quality and performance. My current 2500k has a 212 evo.

Still debating the whole water cooling AIO and if it's worth the potential risk of leaks.

Any opinions?

In total ill need:

CPU/Board/Ram/Cpu Cooler/Case/PSU, probably budget about £800 or there abouts.

EDIT:

made a new thread for my build, thanks again everyone

Good for you! Like many others I'd say the x99 build is a better fit for you. Will be interesting to hear your thoughts after the upgrade. Keep us posted!

I've been using a noctua d14 for a good while, its an excellent air cooler.

cheers! what case do you have with the D14? my next challenge is making sure i find a case that can fit a beefy cooler like the D14/15.

I'm liking the look of the Fractal Design cases.

Fractal cases are well liked. I use a Corsair 450d, its a fairly easy case to build in. I've heard the Phanteks Enthoo cases are awesome too.

Ye I like the clean look of the case, very impressed. I heard the Phanteks are good too but a bit pricey atm.

I think ill go for a 550/650w PSU. something like a superflower or EVGA supernova.

Still debating between air or water cooling, the sensible me says air but the fun factor says AIO water cooling like a h80i/h100i.

Those are good PSUs. The evga is probably a rebadged superflower, so you could probably go with whichever's cheaper, or matches your color scheme.

The h100i is probably the best performer, and the h80i in the same ballpark as a big noctua. As I understand it, all of those should be adequate for an overclocked 5820k.

AIOs look amazing, and make it easier to access your system after building. Whereas big air coolers are probably more robust owing to the fact that they have less moving parts. That wouldn't concern me though.

Ended up picking this one I think
Super Flower Leadex Platinum 750W Fully Modular "80 Plus Platinum" Power Supply - Black

Very frustrating to see so many things pre order or out of stock. Made picking a cooler and PSU annoying. Id prefer to buy everything from one place even though 750w might be a bit overkill.

Going with this cooler too I think
NH-D15S Dual Radiator Quiet CPU Cooler
The normal 2 fan version was out of stock ....
Turns out there is almost no difference though and you can just attach another fan essentially turning into the 2 fan version if you need to.

Looks great! 750w is over the top, but it gives you the option of multi GPU down the road :)

Someone might correct me but I doubt that cooler will hold you back :)

yep! plus i read some people think 600w is pushing the limits with an OC'd 5820k and a bigger card like a 980ti. So i guess 750w covers that in the future.

Thanks for the replies btw. Appreciate the advice.
