I’m trying to decide on a gaming build and don’t know which of these machines would give me the best performance.

  • I5-8400/gtx 1060 6GB/z370 MoBo
  • I5-8400/rx 580 8GB/b350 MoBo
  • Ryzen 5 1600/rx 580 8gb/b350 MoBo
I’ll be playing on a 144hz monitor with Freesync so I don’t know if the amd gpus are worth it to take advantage of the Freesync even though I’d probably get better fps with the 1060?

There’s less than £100 between the builds but it 1060 is the cheapest option. Dual channel 16GB 3000mhz ram on all builds

If anyone could give their opinion about which would perform best that’d help me a lot. Thank you

Yeah, that’s another possibility but I thought the i5 should be slightly better for single core gaming. Do you think the 1600/1060 would be better?

Did a build log here 1600 Vs 8400 with 1070ti/Vega swapped around. Intel comes slightly on top at 1080p , but the fact your forced to go z370 boards which are costly, then heading h370 is pending and has more features and some line ups are more then budget 370 because of features and incoming z390 afterwards. Harder to swallow .
Both are great chips and everywhere you look 8400 is the best $ to performance chip Intel has made in a long long time. Interesting to see how the 8500 fares in price and speed

This is your best bet, 1) for 'future proofing' (6c12t), and 2) 580/1060 won't be able to drive frames fast enough to make adaptive vsync an afterthought. Therefore pairing the 580 with a freesync monitor makes sense.

If single core gaming is important, then i5 is better. But that statement needs to be quantified - the i5 needs a decent cooler so it can keep its boost clock up. The stock intel cooler won't do, unlike the AMD ryzen option.

Thank you, tamzzy. I’ll go with the 1600/580 combination then. I only mentioned the single core gaming because some games will still get a slightly better frame rate on the i5 because of it. I won’t miss those few frames with Freesync though so it doesn’t matter. Decision made :)
