Hi All,

I currently have a Macbook Unibody A1342 (8GB ram 2.6ghz)
I have an xBox 360 but fancy having a go at computer gaming, I also would use this for multimedia Web Design Coursework, so hopefully will be overall slightly better than my current laptop.

I originally started with this:
Mobo - Asus M5A87 AMD 870 (Socket AM3+) Motherboard
76.99

ram - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
44.99

graphics - ******** GeForce GTS 450 1024MB GDDR3 78.98

processor - AMD Quad Core Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz Socket AM3 - Retail 99.98

- Then I thought about Intel i3 or i5,
- My latest thought it to buy a HIS ATI Radeon HD 6950 IceQ X Turbo 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-036-HS&tool=3
But now I am worried about finding the rest for sub £300, I already have a good case (ATX), I am open to the idea of over clocking but probably couldn't afford the water-cooling until February so would like to do this at a later date (if its worth doing at all)

I was wondering if anyone would be able to advise me further, I am very good at Web Development, I am good at helping people with software, but desktop hardware I am not too great at, - all advise is appreciated heavily.

Thanks in advance - First post lets hope we can make it count.

So the starred out competitor didnt give you a clue not to name them?

You did read the FAQ's when you joined this forum?

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Be careful linking to competitors, only use Overclockers links, I would remove them before a mod sees ;)

Okay, please would a mod allow 5 minutes so I can write the names down for you all - Sorry, I had a quick look but am having nightmare with a friends car half way through reading earlier

I will make it simple.

1) What case do you have? what length GFX card can you fit in it to the HDD bays?

2) HDD+DVD drive, do you need any? if you have some are they IDE or SATA?

3) PSU? what is it, make and model number please?

The Case is: Dimensions 205(w) x 440(d) x 430(h)mm (which I believe is ATX?)

I have an old DVD drive (I guess you don't use them a lot so I could probably use it although it is 3 years old, I have 3 2.5 sata hdd's but not sure if I could run one until I can afford a new hd (especially at the minute)
I do not have a PSU yet,

Sorry I feel like I am taking already - I hope this can be a project where I can help one day

Can you get a photo up of the inside of the case?

You are looking for then,

• PSU
• CPU
• Motherboard (depending on case size)
• Ram
• GFX card

For £500

You can.

Okay, do I need any adaptors for HD (isn't it less voltage than a 3.5)

I am a ram whore, I would prefer 8gb I would preferably like to get a better cpu and graphics card and mobo, I think I could find a cheap PSU on short term then get a better one after a few months, is there a specific GFX card or CPU to look out for or a better config than posted above?

I like the look of the 2gb graphics card for 199? I know I am asking for a porsche on a kA's budget but hope I can make a reasonable attempt with the potential to improve in the future (without burning money away by replacing it all quickly)

Dont, basically. Never ever skimp on the PSU, why buy twice? and poor/rubbish PSU's never puts out the wattage/amps it says it can.

What resolution is your screen? thats resolution not screen size in inches.

May need an adapter - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-002-OP&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=72

The

I am afraid I cannot take a picture from the inside atm as it is in my old house, it is easy to find only by typing: Gamer / Server PC Case with 220mm Fan

Thanks

Don't go for a cheap PSU now to buy a better one now (EDIT: now?! Later, obviously.), that's tantamount to bordering on the ridiculous. You could spend £30 on a cheap one when you could just spend £55 now on a half decent one.

It's all going to depend on how flexible you can be with your budget. If you can push it up a little I would suggest the following (note there is no after market cooler here, just used the standard one until you can afford a better one and OC it to about 3.8Ghz - 4Ghz tops for now):
