Does the graphics card in a game just depend up on the quality of the image you get and the CPU is what determins how fast the game runs or is it the GPU power that makes the game even play , basicly i want to play BF3 with my ati 4870, i'm not to anal about the quality as long as its ok.

I have a friend running an i3 and my old 2gb 4870. He said he gets around 35 fps average on high settings (1680x1050). He thinks it's reasonably playable and watching him last night it wasn't stopping him from getting good scores.

Soon he's getting my old 6850 to give him a boost.

What res are you running at?

Hi

For gaming the CPU has to be fast enough to calculate everything, e.g. movement, damage, positions etc. For BF3 a quad works best, it's not too fussy on which one, there is some performance dip on dual core but it will play fine.

The GPU has to drawn everything on screen, the amount of detail and resolution has a big effect. BF3 can push modern graphics hardware pretty hard but you can also have a decent game with less effects.

Either can affect how fast the game will run. I'm currently at medium with a GTX280 1080p and I get 20-40 fps depending on how busy the scene is.
