Gaming Headset - Which One?

Hi again,

Would someone be able to advise on a good gaming headset please?

Budget ~£100, want to pay enough to get good sound quality in games such as BF3 but don't want to spend too much. Best bang for buck?

I will only use it to play games. For music, I will use a 2.0/2.1/5.1 sound system.

I will have a Asus Xonar DGX 5.1 sound card with built in Headphone Amp in my Motherboard - is this sound card good enough? Or, shall I buy a more expensive one?

Please advise?

Personally, I wouldn't bother. They will work, but I wouldn't expect them to perform that well. I'm not a big fan of wireless headphones anyway, TBH. There are headphones which will perform a lot better when used for gaming.

Do you need a microphone? If yes, I'd get something made by Sennheiser. If not, then Creative Aurvana Live! perform very well and are good value. Although they have Creative branding, they are not made by them. They are rebranded Denon AH-D1001, which were very good headphones. I find a lot of headsets that are made by companies who do not specialise in headphones are not that good, and some are just plain rubbish. Depends what you are used to I suppose. For anyone with little experience with decent headphones, a lot of the from the like of Logitech, Corsair, etc, probably sound good. Anyone who has used good headphones though, may find a lot of these gaming headsets are rather poor.

I guess i'll just continue using the wireless headphones for watching movies on my bed (no, not those kinds of movies )

I need a microphone but I have been reading about a good set of stereo speakers with some bass so I can use the headset for music as well as gaming, and then get a clip on mic.

Please note though, I always use my speakers to listen to music, in this case it will be the Onkyo 2.1's I posted in my other thread.

Given that I only use a headset for gaming only, which one would you recommend?

Was reading on these forums today and the following were recommended:

Sennheiser HD 650 (too expensive)
Creative Aurvana Live
SteelSeries Siberia v2
Audio-Technica ATH AD700
Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO
Beyerdynamic DT 990

Opinions on the above?

I'm using Steelseries Siberia V2 with Asus Xonar U3 USB sound card. These are working just fine for me.

Thank you :)

I'll narrow them down one by one before deciding which ones to go for out of the ones listed so far.

I saw a post where you wanted a headset. If yu can suffice yurself with a headphone, I would recommend yu to go for Shure SRH440 or Audio Technica ATD AD700 or that Creative Aurvana Live!

It's me not being very audio savvy, I now know to put headset/headphone in the thread title :)

As I was reading more and more into the world of sound, the more I was gearing myself towards a decent headphone that I could use for gaming and listening to music :p

Thanks for the feedback everyone, very much appreciated.

Have decided to buy the Creative Aurvana Live! (CAL!) - thanks Marsman for the recommendation.

I seriously considered the Audio-Technica ATH AD700 (~£125) however, reviews stated that it excelled mainly in gaming (hearing pin drops in FPS etc).

I wanted the best of both worlds, music AND gaming as I could not justify spending a lot of money just on headphones for gaming alone and therefore went with CAL! (~£55).

I will be getting a clip on mic, the Speedlink Specs to use with the headphones for Teamspeak etc.

Hope this information helps anyone else who is having the same dilemma :)

The Aurvana live is a good call.

Personally I dislike most razor, logitech, etc. headphones/sets for gaming - tho they are fairly well suited to gaming you are still missing a ton of detail from the sound that you don't have to look that far to get back even with "gaming" headsets i.e. the Sennheiser 3xx range.

Quite a few of the gaming headsets are expensive because of the 'Gaming Headset' tag

Would advise people not to fall into this Marketing trick :)

First of all it's Razer bro. Not Razor. :)

And Audio Technica ATH AD700 is a really good choice. One of the awesome ones. But I'm afraid it's not a closed dynamic one which will cause audio leakage and you sure don't want audio leakage in a FPS game. Rather than that it's really a good audio listening device.

I can fully reccomend the G930 but the battery life is rather dismal.

If you are a heavy pc user you will be charging them once a day.

I have a turtle beach px3 which can last days on a single charge, so the G930 is very poor in terms of battery life.

I now almost wish I had got the G35. You have been warned.

ARGH I wish I could use the G930 for more than a hour without being in pain, they're incredibly uncomfortable.

Looks like I'm selling them and using the px3, but the sound quality is way ahead with the G930 :(

Hmm anyone know of a premium wireless headset with good sound quality? I was looking at razer chimaera stereo, anyone have any experience with them?
